Don't know about 2.6, but in 2.4.7 it's Layer--Transparency--Add alpha channel

Hi Glenn,
It is indeed a bit different in Gimp, but once you get used to it, it is not too bad. I tried to locate some tutorials with Google, but I could not find them. I know I found a nice one when I faced the same problem.

Are you sure you saved it into a format that can contain the alpha channel? It could also be you loose it on export.
