GENFresnel.dds

Hello,

I Read some over GENFresnel.dds - I know there is in the FSX Texture Folder, but for Gmax i need a bmp.

Decompiling with Imagetool no results - the bmp is not supported in Gmax.

A Little Help for me ?
Thank you.

Hello Sandra,

I tried to convert it with IrfanView to a .bmp-file. (See in attachements)

If it doesn't works, then I don't know where's the failure.
Attached Files
File Type: zip GENFresnel.zip (687 Bytes, 53 views)

Actually, for Max or GMax you can use any .bmp, .jpg, .png, et cetera that you wish. The only thing of importance is the filename!

In any case, all FresnelRamp textures are 256pix by 4pix in size...

Thank you Bill.

But for what we will need them if I can use a picture from my grandma,
so if they 256pix by 4pix in size.

Sandra, as I wrote before in Max or GMax, only the filename is important, and even the extension is unimportant.

That is why I said you can actually use any image you have handy as long as the filename is correct. The size and contents are ignored.

Here's a little trick I use all the time. The only texture in Max or GMax that is normally seen is whatever you have in the Diffuse Color slot of the FSX Material.

For all the other slots, I have a single 4x4 image named "dummy.jpg" which I can copy/paste/rename as needed to fill in the Specular, Reflection, Self-Illumination, etc. slots.

Sandra, what makes it so handy is all of the copy/paste/rename can be done within Max/GMax's own browser window!

Select the image you want (such as "dummy.jpg") right-click and select Copy. Right-click again and select Paste. Select the copy, right-click and select Rename.
Select the newly named image and return to Max/GMax...

May I ask something?
I really don't know what FresnelRamp is for. Does it increase shading? I read the SDK but I'm not quite understand.
Would someone explain a little bit more, in layman English, please?

It affects the reflectiveness of a curved surface based on your viewing angle of the object.

For example, if you look at a large ball, the part of the ball directly in line with your viewpoint will be "more reflective" than areas that are at an angle to your viewpoint.

The very best example is to simply study the "teapot" in the FSK SDK and read the comments! This allows you to "see" what they are talking about...

Thanks Bill. I need to try that.
Do you use it all the time? or what model you will use this. Does it affect much to the reflection?

Yes, I use some version of a fresnel ramp most always. If it didn't do anything, I wouldn't bother with it...
