• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

P3D v2 T-346A

Detail pass is over, one step forward. Cockpit must be modified because I'm stupid, two steps back.
Lesson learned. I will now complete the exterior before attempting to get back at the pit (like it should have been from the start).
Next up, airbrake and undercarriage. The main gear will be a really tough challenge.

Hello Luca

Great detail on that speed brake! My friend, I love all those awesome and silky meshes you design.

Cheers!
Sergio.
:D

You're not "stupid", you are just learning by trail-error-and do it again ;-)

The main gear will be a really tough challenge.
What is your challenge with this Luca?

I am stupid believe me. I'm so focused on micro managing that I miss the most glaring things. I now have 10cm of void between the cockpit and the fuselage. While it may not sound like much, it's a HUGE distance to cover once you modelled basically everything down to the millimeter, because that means you'll need to modify all those meshes cascading. I'll be bald in no time this way.

For the main gear, here's a pic. Multiple hinges with no real reference points and random axis orientation, some invisible even. I will have to figure it all out and spend a lot of time animating it.

Good day Gents!

Luca, I do not want to bother you... If I may, I'll dare to ask one question: Within your workflow, when would be the right moment to begin with the textures layout? Just wondering, there's a lot going on already! :duck: :duck: :duck:

On the other hand, beautiful work as always; keep it comin'!!!
Sergio.
:D

Ask whatever you want, whenever you need, Sergio!

I generally work in stages, so I start mapping as soon as I finish all the modelling to avoid redoing uv's over and over. But I admit I like mapping and I'm not afraid of doing just that for hours. I also feel having the bigger picture in sight allows me to plan uv clusters more rationally.

Hi Luca

Thanks for the insight! Altough I have aquired the custom to get the UV's done as soon as posible, very often I regret my initial desitions. However; UV's and painting the resulting textures, for me is the worst part in the modeling process. :D

Cheers,
Sergio.

I choose not to believe but go by what I see here, and that is person who is doing a awesome job modeling the T346 to his own flavior of perfection. I notice nothing stupid here

So what. You noticed a 10 cm void and have all the talent in the world to correct it? I do not see any "problem" Luca. You are still learning.. and learning.. and continue to learn and grow better in modeling

Now that is a nice animation challenge Luca.. Even a bit more complex as my own YF16 landing gear.
Q: Do you have a lowering / retraction ... landing-gear-test/maintenance movie of the real gear to get you started?

Looking at those detail! I really love it.
Hope it is not too hard on the frame rate.

Since the Aermachi (M/T)346 has much in common with the Russian Yak-130, perhaps the (big) images in this page can assist you further, constructing and animating her (main) landing gears:

Roland, thanks for your constant help, it's really appreciated! However, the CAD image you linked is that of an undercarriage from the AMX (a different Aermacchi plane). It was used as a gap filler on the first 2 prototypes of the M346 and later on replaced by a lighter and more streamlined system. The RC examples instead are just a simpler solution and do not use a drag brace, nor have a locking mechanism, which are my main source of concern.

As far as the Yak-130 goes, I've yet to find something common to both planes apart from a very general aerodynamic solution. They're, in fact, two totally different planes even if they share part of their heritage.

There's a widespread belief now that the T346 is running for T-X competition as T100 that the plane is a western copy of a Russian design. The truth is that the design on which the 346 is based, the original Yak-130, was an underpowered and generally underwhelming platform who needed serious attention and money that nor the Russian Gvt or Yakovlev could provide and provided. Aermacchi redid the aerodynamic configuration and developed the prototypes in house bringing it to the standard we see today, compensated Yakovlev for the original technical drawings and stepped away from what had become a one way consortium.

Just for a laugh and to bring some scale...when in western countries the use of CAD was already widespread, especially in aerospace, many a design bureau in Russia used Paint. Yes, Paint!!:ziplip:

JT: By the time I finish it, there will be 64 cores and video cards with 1Tb of vram!:D:D

Thanks for your feedback Luca... I've already found a few good websites to get my facts on the Aermacchi M/T346 straightened out (again :-})

Do you already know who manufactured the T346's landing gear?

[edit] - answered my own question already:

LOL, Given the stunning Level Of Detail you put in your work, you will need all the hardware power you can get.

You and the girls, Luca; sigh... but more details -> less hair, as Bjoern and I already know!
