• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Crash to desktop

Hi Roby,
Unfortunately, Microsoft wouldn't hand over the SDK to Dovetail Games when they launched FSX: SE. Luckily, Lockheed Martin, the manufacturer of Prepar3d, offers their SDK to the public, which contains all of the necessary files to allow ADE to "Talk" to FSX. Just Google "P3D SDK." I don't want to post the link on this forum. It was sort of dirty of Microsoft to not give Dovetail Games the SDK when Microsoft had no reason to use it since they quit making the game, but that's neither here nor there. Finally, whenever I make changes to an airport in ADE, should I change the compile folder to the folder for the airport I'm working on? KMKE is only one of the airports I have modified. Sorry for the late replies. I had a class from 9:15 to 11:30 AM, and I went to the Brewers game at 7:10, so I haven't been by my computer much. Hopefully I can make progress here. At least I know that the Orphan Parking thing is the culprit for the CTD's.
Regards,
Kevin Davis

If the airport is contained in it's own folder (i.e. scenery layer), then I compile the ADE BGL file(s) into that folder (actually the scenery subfolder). If not, then into the Addon Scenery/scenery folder.

If you do this, make sure to move or disable the existing AFD file in that addon scenery's folder. I usually move it into the parent folder for safekeeping.

Hi Tom,
Out of curiosity, If I compile the airport into the folder I've been using, why do I need to create a folder for the BGL and the textures for the airport I'm working on? Making the BGL and texture folders was the method Roby suggested yesterday.

Kevin Davis

I don't understand. If I have the airport in a folder that is only for that airport already (i.e. KLAX Los Angeles/scenery), then I compile it into that folder. If I don't have such a folder (usually because I am only modifying the default AFD file), I compile it to Addon Scenery/scenery.

Hi Tom,
I never compiled an airport into its own folder. I've always used the Addon Scenery one. Should I create a folder for the airport I'm working on rather than adding it to the default Addon Scenery folder? I thought I needed to compile the airport to its own folder based on what Roby suggested on Thursday.

Kevin Davis

You do not HAVE to make a separate folder. It is just easier to assure that your airport has priority over other scenery and only contains the bgl's and textures needed for that airport.

Hi,

Yes, it it just a convenience. If you have only a couple of files for that airport (or especially just the ADE files), the Addon Scenery/scenery folder is fine.

Ok, now I'm confused. I finished my work, verified that no faults were present, compiled the file to the right folder, updated the scenery library in FSX, and the CTDs are happening again! Here's the latest ad4 file I did.
HELP!

Kevin,
I have download your KMKE-ad4 in my ADEX 1.76,check for faults,no fault, compile the file and set it in Addon Scenery/scenery folder, there are many other simple airports.
Starting FSX and i can flying and landing,no problems,so i don't no what going on by you.
This help you not so,but i think the file KMKE is fine.

OK - I have been watching this thread and I am totally lost as to what is going on. It is not clear to me now what files are where. I can confirm that there are no faults in the project file you just posted. Also it compiles fine and opens in FSX without any CTD. The chances that this file is causing the crash is small in my opinion. I think we need to go back to basics and clear out any and all bgl files that you have compiled into FSX since this issue started. It appears you have tried to compile into different scenery folders and thus there may be a copy of the airport causing the crash which is still there and loading after this current file. If you are not familiar with loading order then this may be of interest: https://scruffyduck.screenstepslive.com/s/help_docs/m/20268/l/199760-priority-matters

I am not clear when this CTD occurs. Does it only occur when you try to open this airport or when you start FSX? Does it happen if you load a stock airport that is not connected with this airport. I asked for a check with the File Priority Analyzer and you said that there were no additional files. Please be kind enough to run that again and post a screenshot. This is what if looks like on my computer with the project file above loaded and compiled:

There is the one I compiled in layer 131 and the two stock files that contribute to the stock airport display. The data in these will be excluded by the file loaded into layer 131. This is the regular Addon Scenery folder. Based on the order of loading FSX will load that file before it looks for any others. Last file loaded trumps the rest so whichever file is at the top is the one that gets displayed in FSX.

So please run this test before doing anything else and post it as a screenshot before we do anything else

Hi Jon,
I looked at the File Priority Analyzer for KMKE, and it indeed found two instances. Another curveball might be that there are scenery.cfg files in two locations on my computer (which I didn't change). One is in the Addon Scenery folder for FSX: Steam Edition, and another is in Program Data\Microsoft\FSX. The crash occurs when I'm in Free Flight mode, select "KMKE" as the airport, and click "Fly Now." Before the blue loading bar reaches 3%, a CTD occurs immediately. Are you saying that those two BGL files are fighting each other or it's a layer issue? The CTD's also occur when I try to load around any surrounding airports.

Kevin Davis

No those files are not fighting each other. The top one is your modified file and the one under it contains the stock airport which should be left alone and never touched. A scenery.cfg file in your Addon Scenery folder sounds odd and should not be there. I don't think FSX will look at it in there anyway. If you remove the file called KMKE_ADEX_KD.bgl and restart FSX does the CTD go away?

Hi Jon,
The crash went away when I deleted the BGL. I made a mistake about the location of the CFG file. One is in the common\fsx folder and the other is in the Program Data folder. How should I proceed now?

Kevin Davis

I am sorry but I don't know. I am using FSX not the Steam Edition. Which of the scenery.cfg files are you pointing ADE at? It should be the Program Data one as I recall

When you use the File Priority Analyser, can you adjust the width of the 'Folder ' column (make it wider) so that we can 'see' the exact location of the KMKE bgl file - then re-post the image? You should be pointing to the scenery.cfg in the Program Data\ location. Check that this file updates every time you use the Scenery Library in FSX (Steam).

Hi Jon,
Right now, ADE's Compile Path is pointed at C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\FSX\Addon Scenery\scenery.
Should I go ahead and put it in the Program Data folder? I figured FSX looked for scenery in this path rather than the Program Data one. I don't want to do that without checking with you, and really mess up my Simulator!

Hi raymk,
When you say, "Width," do you mean "Load at radius?" That's the only option I saw in the File Priority Analyzer. I checked my Program Options in ADE, and the Save projects to, and Compile paths are the same.

Absolutely do not change the compile path to anything other than ...\Addon Scenery\scenery.

Go to Settings > Options > Folders Tab and check the location of the scenery.cfg. This is mine

I am pointing at the scenery.cfg location in ProgramData for FSX. Use the File Explorer to look for it. I am using FSX and also have FSX:SE but don't really use it. In my ProgramData\Microsoft\ folder there are two sub folders one for FSX and the other for FSX:SE. I am not sure which one FSX:SE is actually using but you need to point to the correct one. Maybe someone else can confirm
