• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

    Error report file upload error

From within ModelConverterX and scenProc you can upload an error report directly to my bug tracker. There is an option to include the file that caused the crash as well. Recently I noticed that most users did not try to upload the file anymore, which makes debugging harder. Today I found out the...

    MSFS texture distortion

The latest development release of ModelConverterX contains some new functionality that help you to inspect if your model is likely to have texture distortion issues in MSFS and also allows you to minimize this effect by updating your model. The video tutorial below explains all these functions...

Material changes using the hierarchy editor

In the latest development release of ModelConverterX a new feature has been added to the hierarchy editor. You can now also modify the material of model parts in the hierarchy editor. When you click on the material name you get a list of all materials in the model and can select which one should...

    Export MSFS scenery package

With the recent changes for scenProc to export to MSFS as well, I have added writing a scenery to a MSFS package to the exporter capabilities. This means that ModelConverterX now also has the same export capability. So if you select “Export scenery” you will be able to export to a MSFS scenery...

    Exporting to MSFS

The latest development release of scenProc does adds initial support for MSFS. Since the release of MSFS I have been waiting to update scenProc as it was not clear to me what purpose the tool would still have. For example the new autogen format is still largely unsupported by the SDK tools, so...

Does it makes sense for MCX to export MSFS packages?

Until now MCX only exports glTF files to MSFS, as I don't think exporting an entire package makes sense. At the moment I am adding an export capability for MSFS to scenProc, so that means I have to create the placement XML and other files that are typically found in the PackageSources folder...

    Interactive node selection

The last ModelConverterX development release adds a cool new feature. You can now select nodes of the object by clicking on them in the preview. The hierarchy editor will then directly jump to that node or the material editor will show the material used on that node. The video below illustrates...

    Hierarchy editor drag node change

I have made a change to the hierarchy editor, when you drag and drop a node onto a new parent node, the location in the world of the object that you are dragging will no longer change. Before this change the object would suddenly move if the new parent has a different transformation applied to...

MSFS Normal textures before and after packaging

Hi all, While trying to improve the preview of MSFS models in ModelConverterX I can across something interesting for the normal textures. I want to check if this is also what other developers experience. The package tool of MSFS does modify the normal texture when it converts it to a DDS file...

    Visibility conditions in the preview

The last development release adds a new feature that had been in my mind for a while already. I have added a way to control which visiblity conditions are shown in the preview. Until now all visibility conditions were rendered as if their condition was true. Now if you click on the Visibility...

    Texture related changes

The latest development release contains two texture related changes. Size multiple of four The first is that MCX now also supports resizing textures so that their size is a multiple of four. This is the requirement that MSFS has for the textures. FSX and Prepar3D have the more strict...

    DIY or not?

When developing my tools I often have to choose between implenting a functionality myself or using a third party library that provides it. Both approaches have their pros and cons of course. When coding something yourself you possibly reinvent a wheel that somebody else already did. But on the...

A 12 year old bug and some hierarchy editor changes

Sometimes bugs spend quite some time on my todo list. For example there was a bug in rendering the default FSX EH101 model that has been on that list for over 12 years. At that time I could not found the cause of the rendering issue and since then the problem has not surfaced too often it seems...

    Upcoming stable releases

I will be releasing a new stable version of ModelConverterX and scenProc in the next few weeks. The reason behind these new releases is twofold. On one hand over the last months there have been many improvements to the tools, mainly in the area of performance. So it is worthwhile to have those...

    Vertex colors

One of the new features of MSFS compared to FSX and P3D is that you can specify vertex colors in your model as well. This means that just like a position or a normal, each vertex of the model can have its own color as well. This can be a more efficient way to set colors, as you don’t need...

    MSFS glTF model orientation

Hi all, This evening I found out that the glTF model and the CFG points were not aligned correctly in MCX. They were rotated 180 degrees relative to each other. I have fixed this by rotating the model 180 degrees on import. This also means that the existing option to rotate a glTF model on...
