• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX 3D streets possible?

I have some photoscenery (VFR Germany) installed on my FSX. It's very great but mainstreets and highways aren't so easily visible. For pure VFR this would be very helpful. I have also UTX Europe 1.4 installed and activated and tested openVFR Terrain (Freeware). Both are on the top of my scenery libary.
Normal textures over phototextures seems to be impossible. Or has someone a solution?

My idea is the following: would it be possible to have 3D streets? If the streets would be 3D objects and high enough they could be seen like normal autogen.
The best would be OSM-Based streets (not all of course, only mainstreets) as source. Is it possible to convert and import something like that in FSX without to much effort.

As far as I know this is not possible, at least not without ruining your fps (like if you use vector bridges all over your scenery).
Maybe your screen/texture resolution is not ideal, let's see a screenshot. With VFR Germany you should be able to spot the roads pretty easily.

You might be able to do it with extrusion bridges set very low....but even if it is technically possible, it would kill performance.

Well, the performance could be a problem. Because FSX needs more CPU power maybe there are some GPU reserves. But 3D could be a problem. Only some streets should be in 3D, not all.

Indeed my resolution isn't very high (1280x1024). Here is a screenshot:

The texture resolution is high but for me personally it's hard to see some streets and if I see them it's hard to make out which street (Autobahn or a "normal" street) it is.
So my goal is to have streets (maybe only mainstreets) that are better recognizable from the other terrain or even better from minor roads. So I could compensate my screen resolution. The streets of UTX are darker. If they were overlayed over the prototextures it would help very much.

Another question: is it possible to tone down/to dim the photo textures of VFR Germany and/or even give them higher contrasts?

If I knew the answer to that I'd long ago done that...

To precise the answer is "no, it can't be changed", unfortunately; you need the source material for that.

I see your point though, I always thought VFR Germany looked a bit as seen on a foggy day, it lacks overall contrast.
Your resolution is ok, you won't get much more from VFR Germany. I'm afraid you'll have to live with it.

Yeah, thats the right formulation. This lack of contrast and foggy style makes ist harder to see the details and flying VFR.

UTX-Overlay is also impossible over Photoscenery, so you're probably right: I'll have live with it.

Thanks a lot for your explanation and your help!

Maybe it could be possible to reach of similar effect, if your towns would be made from high resolution photo and very high resolution mesh. But I think the mash doesn't exist yet. When you have high resolution photo scenery, sometimes it can look like 3d objects are there. For example high way bridges. That's because the satellite cam captured buildings from side, not just from top. When there are shadows near to the buildings, then they look like 3D. But this feeling vanishes if the mesh resolution is not high enough. So I think it would be possible to reach it, but not for high buildings.
