• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX A question of scale.

Hi Folks.

I use TileProxy for my FSX scenery and it's great. It uses Virtual Earth satellite images to display the scenery. This means that I see the real world scenery image when I fly. I am wanting to make some changes to the LIBG airport. The FSX stock airport runway is well short and the taxyways are off alignment.

I have take an FSX screenshot in Top Down view that shows the real world airport in TileProxy with the FSX airport displayed on top. This really shows up the differences.

I open ADE and use the screenshot as a background image. The first thing is that, compared to the size of the stock airport display, the background image is really small. So I open the Position Image window and re-align the heading and scale it up to match the stock airport. Then, In FSX I load the airport and connect to ADE. I then slew around checking distances from apron to taxiway to runway end etc. However, I keep having to change the scale because what fits at one point, is off distance wise, to another. I have printed off the chart for the airport and resized the runway to the correct length. That should now be a constant for scale. At the end of the evening, I save the airport and compile it. Next day I have to start over again becaus the background image is once again the original small size. I have read about locking the image and saving a screen image from ADE but I'm not sure what that does. Basically, I cannot get a constant scale and a fixed image to work with.

I hope this makes sense and that someone is able to help out with manipulating sizes and actual distances in a way that I can retain them from work period to work period.

Regards...Ken.
ps. Is there a good tutorial for this sort of thing?

I am not sure what is happening for you but I did a quick test by loading a screen shot into an ADE project. I resized and moved it. I saved the project file. I opened the project file again and the background image was at the revised size and location. Section 8.3 of the English Manual covers background images

Ken,

Use SBuilder to get your background images. It will provide a .TXT file with the corners of the captured area and this will align the photo to the airport in ADE perfectly.

Hello Jon and Dave.

Thanks for the replies. Jon, Perhaps I'm missing something here. I have my Stock Airport open then I Add my background Image which I have to jiggle around with to match the stock airport. I lock it and save airport when finished my work. I then compile and finish. When I next open from...(thought here) Ahhh...here's the problem. I'm not re-opening the airport from the Open Airport option Ctrl + O, I'm re-opening from the bgl Dohh another senior moment!! Thanks Jon. The word Project was the lightbulb moment.

Dave. I'll need to get SBuilder. Mmmm Another learning curve. Ah well. Thanks Dave.

Regards...Ken

We have very nasty things in store for people who open their work from the Bgl file ;)

Hi Jon, that sounds ominous. You make it sound as though it is a bad thing to open from the Bgl file. I'm not really a techie, so am not sure what I was doing wrong, apart from losing the background image. Is there something bad happening between the sim and ADE?

Regards...Ken
ps... Don't reply if I am asking something that you don't wish to talk about at present.

Forgot those George- the list is long. Plus I recall that repeated loads and saves of bgl files can result in loss of precision in placements

Okay, I think I've got it now. I can save my airport after working on it and only compile it to the bgl when I'm happy with it. Until then, I open it as a 'Project'. Thanks also for the link, I did not know about all those articles. Perhaps, if you don't mind, you can explain what the difference is between the existing stock airport and my new altered airport and how does FSX know to open 'my' airport and not the stock one? Basically, what happens to the 'old' airport? It must still be there in among all the other original airports.

Cheers...Ken

Ken. Go to the online help site and look for the article on Priority Matters. You might have more questions after reading it. But that is how things work.

Okay Jon. Thanks for all your help and of course everyone else who chipped in. What a great programme, thanks for it, even though I've been pulling my hair out!! I'm beginning to make some headway with it now.

Regards...Ken.
