• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

A real modelling/painting tool

Hi!

I was talking to a friend yesterday and we came into the subject of modelling tools - as so often based on our experiences of using Gmax.
We were thinking, how "difficult" (none of us are real programmers) could it be to combine the paintfeatures of f. ex. Photoshop with a modelling program? Think about it - you make your model, and then paint it in 3D! Choose f. ex. a brush, it´s style and colour, and then paint directly on the 3D object. The program itself then creates the bitmap to be exported. No more worries of mapping, UVWs, faces and such - the program deals with all that. Add dirt? Just select the airbrush and spray it on the selected parts! Add a line? Just select the pencil, click on the start- and endpoint and a line is following the mesh!

Well, wouldn´t that be just dandy? :)

EDIT: I know that in a way SketchUp provides some of these features, but it does not have all the capabilities of Gmax and also is a bit messy regarding co-location of vertices, welding and so on... just import a complex model to Gmax and you´ll see what I mean.

The closest one comes to that is VASS from Abacus, that works with the FSDS source files. You still have to create the textures and assign the coordinates, but you can do that from within VASS.

There is a program, Tatoo, that will take *some* textured 3D Models (like a direct x file) and paint directly on the "model". Now THIS is great for basic alignment of texture lines, etc.

VASS and Tatoo have a limited set of painting tools.
 
Hi!

I looked further in the vast pool of information called the "internet" and found a tool that is named 3D Deep Paint. It seems to have most features that I was thinking about, and works as a plugin with 3DS and other builders. However there are a number of questionmarks on how it works when exporting objects to other applications such as FS, and I do not have the means to buy a copy just to try it out. I´ll check out the trial and try to get it to work with Gmax. Will report back.
