• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Adding a TACAN to AI plane

Hi folks,

can someone tell me if (and how) it is possible to add a TACAN beacon to an AI plane? I have read about people turning TACAN on in a KC-135 tanker, but that seems to relate to a multiplayer environment. I would like to use it for an AI plane, (specifically the kc135t_navy_drogue.zip from flightsim.com).

Tia,

It has been done for AI carriers so should be possible for KC-135....

Technically a TACAN hasn't been added to the carriers, instead code to calculate the range and bearing to the carrier has been added to the appropriate gauge. If you're flying an aircraft with the gauge in the effect is the same.
Essentially the gauge looks for ships, with arrestor cables and then sorts by model radius to identify specific ship types (e.g. default Nimitz class or Javier's much better add-on). To see how it's done search for the improved F/A-18 HUD add-on*, you can read through the XML code to get an idea. Your big problem will be finding the right set of parameters to filter so the gauge only points at the aircraft you want it to.

*Or download the Swordfish from www.flyingstations.com which uses the same technique in its FDO gauge and may be easier to read as it has less extra functionality, i.e. it just finds carriers. On the other hand I wrote it so it may look like gibberish.

I think you have lost me. I know there are lots of things about FSX that I have not the faintest idea of. Anyway, I just found out that the Hornet has a real radar! That is not as easy as a TACAN signal, but it is a way to find the tanker without using the POIs.

Thanks for listening,
