• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Advice on surface reflection

Hi all,

I've just started out on my first scenery project, and so far I've managed to get a photoreal background through SBuilderX and have just created my first ground poly through gmax (with FSX gamepack) which will serve as a runway.

I've got some trouble with shine/reflection on the poly surface and I'm not sure how to reduce it or remove it. I have only textured the base layer to test that I can actually do this, so I'm not sure if adding the other layers will cure it. As I'm using the FSX gamepack, I cannot alter the asm files as in the tutorial by Bill Womack, as they don't exist!

What I basically want to do is to make the surface none reflective, like the default runways.

I've included a screenshot of the poly just placed on the terrain to show what I mean; the difference between the default runway and my initial poly is fairly obvious.

Any help you can give would be fantastic!

Cheers

Chris

Ok, I realised I was creating a standard texture instead of an FSX texture in material editor. I've checked the option suggested, but I now lose all texture and just have a black model!

Is there any guide to texturing using the FSX gamepack that you know of, so I can sit down and learn it?

Cheers

Edit: scratch that, I'd accidentally deleted the .dds file! However, my texture is now just plain white!

Edit: scratch that too! Realised I'd added a specular layer and had a bmp and dds file of the same name in the texture folder. All is good. Thanks for helping a newbie!

...and to answer your question about FSX Materials, have you actually looked in the SDK? There are two complete articles about FSX Materials. However, they are both located in the aircraft section, but do apply to scenery as well, which is why they are often overlooked... :D
