• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Animated Windsocks??????????

Hello all
As a last resort im asking if their is anyway to create an animated winsock with gmax and fs2004. I've search several forums and look through animation tutorials but cant seem to find what im looking for to get started. I have been using tick_18 command and using two scenery objects(one w/animation...the other without). I've seen somewhere that their is limitaions as far as animations but can"t seem to find what and where it was. Any help and feedback to where i can start or a link to read as far as limitations would be greatly appriciated. Thanks in advance
Dave

Dave ... hee .. the guys here just edumacated me on this today!! Looking over your post I noticed that you stated "tick_18". If that is not a transposition typo then it is supposed to read "tick18_yourpartname". Then as I found out today if you've at any point resized that part you'll need to go in to the hierarchy tab for that part and press the "Scale" button in Reset area otherwise the animation won't survive the export.

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.......i never put a part name with it. Thanks alot for your response tachyon and hopefully i can get this going.

I would be interested in seeing the finished product. Please post a screenie when you are done.

Thanks

I'm not entirely sure that having a part name after the underscore is totally necessary dut I'm thinking it is since it's a trigger for gMax. edit: The more I think about this I'm almost possitive that you do have to append a part name to tick18_. The main point was your syntax. tick_18 -> tick18_

If you animate multiple parts as I have in my 85m tall wind generator then obviously you'll need to append different part names to each animated part.

i'll give it another try now......thanks for the info and hopefully i get it working and if i do.....i'll post it on here. Again...thanks for your help
Dave

Yes, you definitely need to name any animated part in Gmax with a "tick18_" prefix in order for it to animate properly in FS. There is however a gotcha (surprised?) with doing an animated object that also rotates in the wind. As I understand it from Arno, any Gmax-created tick18_ part in an object will automatically keep it from rotating to the wind once it's exported. It's too bad because I can think of some cool effects that could be gotten with objects that are both animated and rotatable... but for now it's not to be.

thanks,

For NOW indeed :D. I have an idea on how to solve this, but I should still test it.

...just found this thread after trying for hours to animate my rotaded windsock... :banghead: :banghead: :o

The mdltweaker should work on the animated object anyway, is that right? That means of course, that I'll have to create ten or so mdls for the windsock, depending on the winddirection. And this of course for three types of the windsock (low, medium, high wind)... :banghead: :o

I don't get it - I tried every way now and the animation doesn't appear, even if I don't tweak the mdl. :(

I assigned a tick18_*-name to the animated part, I resetted the scale, I exported it properly and everything. The object shows in FS but doesn't move. :(

What am I doing wrong?

This seems to become a monologue... :D

I just found out that you can't do vertex animations for FS  - is this right? :(

That would mean, that I'll have to create some little cylinders that overlap, which is very uncomfortable and doesn't look very nice, I think. :(

Or is there another possibility? (still can't give up the hope that someone will reply to this... :o)

Yes, that is correct. You can only animate parts (technically by writing the source code manually you can animate vertices, but you would have to write a lot of vertexlists in that case).

I'm working most of this day on my windsock (lucky me, that I have the time...), but it's still tricky. I think the problem is, that I use the wrong syntax for the wind direction parameter in mdltweaker. In the other post, you only wrote for wind direction:

0C74 - wind ground heading

When I enter min 000 and max 359 or 060 or anything, it's not working. Do I have to add an "h"?

Hi Thorsten,

If I remember correct the value is between 0 and 65536.

Finally - the value is true. :)

Just another "little" problem... I posted it at the mdltweaker-thread.
