• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Animation Tip Please

Gday All

Im constructing a hanger with animated doors set to Nav2 with Cat !

Creating two doors that open in the Y axis works fine with a smooth realistic animation.

However, when attempting 4 doors, two sets of two that move in opposing directions im having an issue with a gap appearing in the animation between Door 1A and 1B, the same with Door 2A and 2B.

I have attempted to link Doors A to Doors B, then animate Doors A so that they open and cover doors B, then i animated Doors B ( with Doors A following ) to the fully open position.

This follows a logical process untill you play the animation and then you find that Doors B tend to get out of sync with doors A and spoil the animation.

Is this just a process of refinement of the keyframe steps or do i have the link to the doors the wrong way around, or , set up two seperate animations for Doors A and B ( all 4 doors have a Tick18_ name ) and then export for tweaking in CAT.

Ive spent a whole day fiddling and not getting very far.

thks & rgds Jeff

I dont know if I'm right here, but I think you need to link door B to door A and animate door A. door B should then move with door A, it wont be animate as you want it will move as if it is attached to it.

not A to B and animate A
but B to A and animate A

Hi Jeff,

Have you tried to add an additional position key frame to the door that should stay static for the first part of the animation? I think that should solve your problem (at least, the 4 door animation I made worked that way).

Thks guys, i know it must be the method in the way im creating the animation and i just need to knut out the process so all suggestions are well recieved. Once i have it sorted ill post the resultant steps / process for those who are yet to try this animation.

Hi Jeff,

If you problem is that the two outside doors start moving to fast (so, before the inside doors have reached the position that the outside ones should also start), then try to add an additional position key at the frame where they should start moving. You can add this key on the motion tab in GMax.

:) thats the conclusion ive come to but ill test it out tomorrow as after a 12 hour day on a Monday, im a tad tired :D .

Well, im getting to old for Pride so im willing to ask for some help and advise :D .
Attached is the Gmax file of the animated hanger im trying to animate. Everything works well regarding tweaking it in CAT but the finished result is rather erratic.
If some kind sole has the time to look at the animation in Gmax and advise me where ive gone wrong id be very gratefull.

The two outer doors are still dropping out of syncronisation with the two inner doors after tweaking in FS9 and the two Inner doors seems to zap past in the latter part of thier animation in FS9.

I just cant see the wood for the trees.

Hi Jeff,

I redid your animation in the way I did with my own hangars.

I hope you can see from the updated GMax file I have attached, what I have done. I noticed that you had a lot more keyframes in your animation. Maybe that is part of the problem.

Please let me know if the GMax file is not clear. Then I will try to explain again in words what I have done (although it is a bit hard to explain).

Hi There...

I have not looked at the door (yet), but I suspect that your problem is linking....

Have you looked at my gate tutorial (part 2), it explains this.... and in fact, from memory, I also go wrong during the tutorial and correct myself...

Cheers,

Hi Nick,

I don't think linking helps for doors like this. As the outer doors remain static while the inner one already started moving, linking them does not really help. Or I am wrong here?

That's the trick. One fluid movement.... I have cheated.... try it.

OK, I will compare it with the version I made :).

Thks Guys, ill have a gander at both after a late dinner , really appereciate this !

Sensational Guys, both worked perfectly and both showed me my missunderstanding of the animation process.

It is now obvious i had to many animation points and this is what was creating the out of sync effect and jumps.

Very much obliged and now regrowing my hair ive torn out :D
