• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Another transparency issue

Hello,

I'm having a problem with the transparency of a grass that I did. From certain angles it draws the objects behind. Both objects are made with LODs and, in theory, would need to be made so, because I need to control the distance when it shows (unless you have another technique for this in FSX).
None of this occurs when I'm not using LODs, though.

Could anyone help me?

Hi,

That's interesting, I have not heard before of LODs having an influence on the drawing order of things. Are you sure that you are using materials with exactly the same settings in the different LODs?

No. It is not the same settings for the materials! For the grass I have just one material, but to the other objects I have more materials, but in just one MDL with LODs too. If I don’t use LODs to those objects, the issue is gone!

Hi,

I understand the different objects have different materials. But within one object, do the different levels of details use the same materials?

The grass are in different MDL.

Terminal and other objects are in one MDL, with LODs, no problems with transparence between those objects.
The grass are in separate MDLs, also with LODs, and the problem occurs between the grass and the other objects. Did you got it?

If I make the Terminal and other objects without LODs, the problem doesn't occur.

Hi,

Yes, I got that. And when you make the terminal with LODs, do these different LODs all use the same materials with the same settings? Or do the lower LODs have another material?

Which tool are you using to make each version?

The main difference you will have using LODs with (say Max) is the addition of the .xanim tag, which will alter how the material is rendered.

However, you usually have less problems, rather than more ... apart from interposed objects.

Ztesting may not solve this.

LOD_400 uses the same number of materials as LOD_350, but LOD_150 just uses one of them.

The grass uses just one material!

Has it any influence to the drawing order? I did not know!

Hi, hcornea!!

I'm using just MAX9 and exporting with .xanim to get the LODs working. Could you explain what is the difference in how the material is rendered between the two ways of compiling?

You are adding a dummy animation to get the LODs working persumedly.

Hence the materials are not enabled for drawcall batching.

The advanced transparency settings will not work the same way, as a different part of the FSX 3D engine is being used.

Thanks for your explanation!
