• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Any Ideas?

Hi,

I think the best way to show my problem is to give my work flow and then illustrations of the outcome.

Workflow:

1. Download geotiff from usgs
2. reproject using fwtools: gdalwarp -t_srs "+proj=latlong +datum=WGS84" -of GTiff -co "INTERLEAVE=PIXEL" ___.tif ___.tif
3.Use resample to convert to bgl
inf:

[Source]
Type = GeoTIFF
SourceDir = "..."
SourceFile = "..."
Layer = Elevation
NullValue = 0,0,0

[Destination]
DestDir = "..."
DestBaseFileName = "..."
LOD = Auto

The pictures show the results of converting just imagery, just the terrain, and also the info after reprojecting the geotiff. Imagery results in mainly water and the terrain results in a hole. Not sure what's going on and would be grateful for any help. Thanks.

Hi,

The inf you show is for the elevation data I assume, for imagery you will need to have a different one with type imagery.

The elevation looks weird, are you sure the units of the source image are meters?

Yeah, I just gave one inf example. As for the units I'm pretty sure they're in meters, but I'm having trouble confirming that. What's the best way to go about checking? I hope it's possible to change them if they're incorrect :).

According to USGS the elevation data is in units of meters. Something must be happening then during either reprojection or resampling. I haven't a clue what though?

The NullValue removes a black edge around the imagery that would otherwise appear.

I'm still trying to understand why even when I convert just the imagery a lot of water appears on it in the sim. Seems like it should just be converting the image and leaving it at that. So I'd be happy if even I could get the imagery to work. I guess if that problem was fixed the elevation would probably work too since the two problems seem to be related.

Hi,

I assume you have an alpha channel in your imagery. That channel then becomes a watermask. So either adjust the inf file to specify if the alpha channel is used for blend or water mask. Or remove the alpha channel from your imagery.

Then why is in an INF file for elevation?

I just leave it in there for when I want to compile imagery. Meaning I just switch the Layer value in the same inf for different compilations. So just a convenience, nothing to do with compiling elevation and it doesn't effect it if I leave it in there.
