• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Autogen vs real dimensions

Hello world!
I'm newbie here but found your community just one place where ppl can explain me some things.
I need help about autogen over fototerrain.

In the real world we have xyz (3d) dimensions in one scale.
If someone tree have 30m heigh еxactly inside annotator (created in 3dmax with 1m units scale) is it means then such size would be correct only for textures with just one resolution (lets say 1m/pix) ?
So they will be looks too high at the fototerrain with 4,7m/pixel or too small with 7cm/pix phototerrain.

I noticed then some small row howses did not appear in my scene. I think the reason was that annotator can't use less then one tile of appropriate
autogen teхture (16pix/tile per front side for the row houses). So if i have 0,7 m/pixel fototerrain that means i can't see row howses with sides less then 16x0.7=11.2 meters as result?
To solve the probs I see only two ways: work with new fototerrain with best resolution or just put library objects instead row howses?

Please explaine me my fault. I didnot find any info inside fsx sdk about autogen and the real dimensions.:scratchch

Im not sure if I exactly understand your problem but autogen scale isnt related to the size of the pixels in the ground texture: All objects reference the real world scale (not exactly equal across the globe but close)

So, for example you could make a photoreal bgl with each pixel covering 1km (i.e extremely low resolution) but then annotate with trees and buildings covering far smaller areas- It makes no differnce.

I think your problem is that, as you have alluded to, that your row houses are simply too short (in absolute terms) and so are not showing because FS cant fit the autogen object into the length you have drawn/annotated: FS doesnt scale the objects to fit and my guess is if the object is larger than the annotated area, it just wont draw the object.

Thanks for reply Timmo.
The probs that annotated area have real dimensions according my phototerrain. I want to place object in correct scale
but i can't put it so small acording to it size as object.
so if i understand correct i can not place row houses that will be correct to scale on the phototerrain with any resolution?
To see correct object (row howse wich exactly fit top of view house picture on my phototerrain) i need to make high resolution phototerrain first. Is it one and only way to see my row house? Can i just adjust somehow "scale" of objet's properties as i can do it inside object placement tool with standart buildings?

Hi,

There is no need to scale your autogen, as they are placed with a real world size. Lets say your house is 30x10 meters in size. Then it does not matter if the photoscenery has a 1 meter or a 0.1 meter resolution. In the last case just more pixels are covered by the autogen object, but there is no need for the scale of the object itself to change.

Hi
Thanks Arno.
Please tell me then why my small row houses won't appear in the scene? lets say i wish to place them with 4х8 meters in real world terms (yes i need really small),but not probs to build 40Х80. What reason of such restrictions? is it just my own bug? Where can i find info about minimal real size using SDK annotator for FSX?

Hi,

I have not seen information on minimum sizes, but I guess there must be one. Under a certain size there is not so much texture more to map on the object, in that case you might be better of using a library object.

Thanks Arno. It's a pity. I have not seen small needed library objects with slightly different dimensions inside annotator. I planned use row houses with custom created textures. :(

Yeah I've been hearing reports of autogen having a minimum size limit...

Haven't tested myself but my beta testers have told me that below a certain size autogen houses won't show up...
