• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Blueprints not always alignt

Hi,

After working on many models, for the fun and learning, I see that I always have a problem with the blueprints that are not good.
How is what I do:

-I get the bluepint from theblueprints.com
-I will make 3 bmp files with the front, left and top.
-I will make planes in 3DS Max with the sizes of the pictures.

Are the blueprints not good, or do I something wrong?

Other than making sure that the 3 images display the plane in exactly the same size, there is no real problem. I would avoid making them "background images" and instead texture a box that has exactly the correct 3D dimensions of the aircraft with those three textures. If you flip all the polygons of the box it will be "inside out" and you can build the plane inside it. Others use other tricks like making the box partially transparent.

Hope this helps,

I have noticed that some of the blueprints from blueprints.com seem to be tracings done overtop of photos, they look like blueprints and smell like blueprints, but they have the same parallax errors, barrel distortion, perspective, etc that the original photos had. Here's an example, note that the lower cab corners should be the same width as the top of the box rails and the overall view seems to be from an eyepoint slightly below the center of the drawing; you can't see the bottom of the rear window for example, the front wheels are closer together than the rear wheels due to the perspective effect:

It's a photo that's been nicely traced, not a true blueprint.

That was taken from a photo and drawn over.

You need something with 'zero' perspective.

You will find that most 3-Views online are bad, un-precise and not the best to go from. Most were quickly done from a brochure, or just raw sketches that were created for magazine articles or brochures.
They are good to a degree, but you might use good side and front views of photos that might be useable for double-checking things.

In the old days of FS, we used photos for making planes from as most 3-Views werent available anywhere. You needed the right photos though, as most had some perspective effect in them.

Its very difficult to find super precise 3Views. Very very difficult. When you find one for the plane you are making (or car or boat, etc), you are very blessed... Very...

RC websites can be great for finding 3 views. Some of those guys find actual blue prints from corporations and all.

My 2 cents

Blueprints.com gives you 2 choices. vectored prints and database. You have to pay for vectored prints. But the database sometimes has extra large prints that will work fine since you can still create parts to size.

The best method for re shaping the prints is to make 3 just as you stated. Make sure they all have a center point that can be set to center. So this way you can lock the background and zoom in and move around freely.....

Also size does not matter, the bigger the better. ;)

Thanks for the link, Rainer!

I had just a quick look, quite impressive so far!

Kai

Thank you very much. I even found the same print in very high detail of the project i just started last week.
Now that i develop planes, i really needed that link.
