Building Window...

Help Guys, Please....

I've modified a building in Gmax (original was from TRAINZ download section).
It's got a window that you can see through.

I've done the texture replacement (original was .tga) and put objects inside the building.

In Gmax , I can see through the window , zoom inside and see the details etc. I've even put 3 walls (planes) inside and textured them so that you can't see the background.
I've used fs2004 gamepack and got the two files (mdl and xml), altered the xml for position , guid etc and compiled and put it in to fs2004 sdk and then taken the resulting bgl and put in addon/scenery. I also moved the proper textures into addon/texture.

The main building shows up, along with the outside texture AND a greyish square where the see through window should be , even though the textures are in addon/texture. I can move inside (by slewing) but cannot see thru the window.

I can't find a bgl comp error log so presume that everything is okay ,as the bgl appears in the fsdk for forward moving.

PLEASE can u  help with the problem . I've tried umpteen tutorials but can't find anything similar , or as good, for FS9 ,as this tut for Trainz.

I've looked on your site and found your tutorials but this is getting frustrating now !!

:banghead:

If the original texture was tga, than I belive it had an Alpha channel.
You need to use something like " dxtbmb " program. Load the tga file
and u should see to the left a small window that shows the alpha channel.
now save it as dxt3. ( save as extended bitmap...)

Hi Pilon,

cheers for reply.

Yes I had noticed (then forgot) that it had an alpha channel on the orig tga file.

However, I saved it as a dxt BUT gmax can't see the format....

I've also tried (but will try again) to put that dxt file into fs9, substituting for the one put on the model, but it might save dimension, format etc in the original from gmax - mkmodel - xml guid.

Oh bother... here I go again !!!

:yikes:

hey booboo

I usaly make 2 folders. 1 I call "images" in which I put the orignal files
like tga 24 bit bmp and psd. After all, thats what gmax can read. After
I'm done with the gmax object, I use dxtbmp or imagetool to convert
the texture and save it in the texture folder of the scenery. This way
I can always go back to the image folder and change my texture again

btw, you will not be able to through objects in gmax, only in fs.

Building Windows...

Cheers Neal,

I'm going thru it again today. I'll convert the original tga to dxt and try that in fs9. :cat:

btw.. I used google to look for gmax tutorials... Those Trainz people have loads toots ! for modelling stuff. Think I'll give up flying and go choo-chooing :rotfl:

Built Window !!

:)
Followed your advice neal and I've put everything in dxt3 format...

now have a crappy building BUT can see my textured stuff inside. After all the years I've spent on fs2002 and fs9 the simple things eluded me!

I will now spend the rest of the week trying to build something properly.

cheers
