• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Coordinates problem with background map

I used FSscreen to shoot a high-resoulution ortophoto bmp from the net, which I want to use as a reference background for my airport. I noted the coordinates in the Upper Left and Lower Right corners, as I used to do for Fly II DEM`s.

My problem is the coordinates are EUREF89, UTM zone32. The look like this (Upper Left): N 6678780 E 612107. How in the world can I convert this into coordinates SBuilder understands :banghead:

Hi Jose,

How did you know I got Globalmapper? Version 5 actually. Maybe you are thinking about using it in the trial period. I liked it so much that I purchased it :D

But my picture is a .bmp which I shot with FSscreen, and has no geo-references in it. I looked in Globalmapper, but could not find a way to convert coordinates.

Hi,

If your trial has run out, using FwTools is also an option :). I have made an article on the Wiki that shows how to add georeferences to a file and then convert it to WGS84.

Georeferencing in GM

Hi, Andrew

To georeference an image in GM or in any other tool you need to know two pairs of coordinates, preferably at the opposites corners North-West (one pair) and South-East (second pair).

You need to know also the image dimension in pixels, its Datum and coordinates system.

In GM, open the image (JPG, BMP, TIF) and GM will ask you if you want to georeference it. Say yes and will open a screen where you can put the above information, for the first and second points and also for the image datum.

If you do not know the pixel size, say that the first corner is (0,0) pixels and for the opposite corner put the cursor at the image South-East and GM will identify the positiion in pixels. Add the coordinates.

Once you have the image opened and georeferenced, you can convert to others system and/or datum.

It's not difficultty, at all.

Regards,

José

Thx guys, I was finally able to get a result, though it is not precise enough.

I understand that both the Upper Left value I write down from the Norwegian map server (EUREF89, UTM Zone 32) , value N6678629 E612303 and what I get after converting in Globalmapper = N60*13´44.04N E11*01´39.50 are WGS84, and the difference is not more than approx 1 meter.

But what are "N6678692" ? Is decimal coordinates, arc seconds...I don`t understand what I am converting from.

Another question, in SBuilder the format is like N60*13´44.2506, but from Globalmapper I get only ´44.04. Is this why I loose precision, and can I set Globalmapper to give more decimals?

BTW, in ADE there is yet another format, like N60 11.722146. Makes me very confused.:censored:

Hi Andrew.

You need to convert from UTM projection ( zone 32 ) to Geographic projection, and you need to go from EUREF89 projection to WGS84 Datum.

A screenshot from your computer screen is not going to get you a fine level of precision, but if you have the right projection, datum and georeference, you might get close enough.

Some info on projections:

Hi Andrew,

Those UTM coordinates you are seeing there are probably in meters from the origin of UTM zone 32. So it is not in degrees or so.

EUREF89 and WGS84 are almost the same, so if you have data in EUREF89 lat/long, you don't have to convert them to WGS84 in general as that would not really make a difference. But since you have UTM now, you need to convert to lat/long.

I think also EUREF89 is now known as ETRS89 so you might look for that, but like Arno wrote, you can probably assume it as WGS84 datum with no error. If you are using SBuilder 2.05 I think you can convert your corner coordinates right in that. I don't think Luis has ported that into SBuilderX yet.

Hi guys, and thanks for the info.

I was not able to answer sooner as I have been travelling from Norway to a ship outside Angola. 40 hours and no sleep. I hate airports and international flying, hope in the future I can stick to simming only :D

It is coming back now. Brought Globalmapper with me and will play around with it in my floating office here.

Dick, thx for the projections link. I was into this in Fly II times, but my synapses definitively needs a refresh. And I think I might buy myself a scientific calculator :)
