• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Diamond mines

Any suggestions on how I can go about this:
I'd like to put in a few diamond mines- the surface ones with a large deep crater. Typically they are 500m deep and a few Km in diameter.

The ones I have looked at usually have a pond in the bottom, so my first try was using KLM-FSX to create a deep but small lake. The results are not great because the rim diameter of the crater is too large.

Yeah ive only thought about this hypothetically....

I can see three options...each of which has its problems: You are unfortunately limited by the resolution of the mesh and the settings applied to that mesh (resolution and complexity) by the user.

You could make a hole using a series of flattens but the results will be very dependent on the users mesh settings.

You could use a water polygon which will cut a hole irrespecitve of mesh user settings I think? But, if you use a water polygon it has to be textured water?

One possibility may be to add a flatten over a fairly large area set at the lowest point of the mine, then actually place a 3D model of the mine to 'fill the hole'?

I'm going to go for that last option. The 3D model seems most reliable. Since my last post I have spotted 3 other mines in the area, and there must be more in places like South Africa.

Just had another thought- You can create a new VTP polygon definition in your terrain.cfg which drops the local terrain under the polygon while adding a texture?
