• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Difference between P3D / FSX autogen density ( SOLVED )

Hi folks, an odd observation here, which I wondered if anybody else is seeing. FSX autogen at maximum appears to be far more dense than P3D v4.5 at the same, maxed-out settings. I've attached two shots below - the first is in P3D with everything maxed out. The second is in FSX, same autogen files ( trees are present but it makes no difference either way ) and yet far better coverage is present. Any ideas? P3D is fully updated as is graphics card, neither sim has any .cfg tweaks that should affect anything. If anything, P3D should show more autogen buildings and yet it does not and I have no idea how to correct this.

Hello:

As P3D was originally ESP (aka "FSX.exe SP2" with some new command line switches), I would expect that L-M would have documented any change to the internal Autogen limits.

AFAIK, those P3D limits are the same as FSX, and are explained by Nick Whittome MVP ...here:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/555739

Suffice it to say, the default setting for Autogen rendering used internally by FS is less-than-maximum density.

Maximum Autogen display must be manually enabled by editing the FSX.Cfg (AFAIK, the P3D equivalent would be 'Prepar3D.cfg').

BTW: A very informative 'vigorous discussion' on Autogen annotation / display limit Pros / Cons ...is in an archive here:

Hope this helps. :)

Hi.

Maybe it helps to edit the Prepar3D.cfg. There is a small bug in the P3Dv4. If one leaves a corresponding entry on standard, then less autogen buildings are represented. Change the default value, then more buildings are displayed:

[SCENERY]
AUTOGEN_BATCH_LOD=1

The default is = AUTOGEN_BATCH_LOD=2

Maybe that helps a little further :)

Thanks Gary, but this time Christian wins the cigar - that nailed the problem first time around! Many thanks! :)

Indeed, my initial Google search was limited to the P3D Autogen SDK.

Curiously, L-M's documentation for these new (since P3Dv3.x ?) Autogen parameters is instead found here: :scratchch

http://prepar3d.com/SDKv3/LearningCenter/settings/application_settings.html

"Application Settings

Configuring Prepar3D

Overview

Settings are stored in Prepar3D.cfg...

Coming soon..."

Young(-er) "whipper-snapper"!.

But seriously, as much as I try to keep up with whats happening in P3D, I am likely to still miss a few things, because I do not yet feel P3D's overall feature set 'sufficiently' matches / exceeds FSX SP2 ...for me to buy it. :duck:

Thanks for the 'heads-up' on these "new" parameters, Christian. :)

PS: Since AFAIK, 'most' FS developers are still making only (1) version of their scenery to be installed to either or both FSX / P3D, it would be interesting see if the (Pre-P3Dv3.x ?) Autogen attenuation / maximizing parameters I cited above:

TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_[object type]_PER_CELL

...are still retro-compatibly supported by the P3Dv3.x et. seq. run time rendering engines when manually edited into the Prepar3D.Cfg file.

Apparently, according to Holger Sandmann, as of March 28, 2015, these parameters may still be supported:

for the technical information about the TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_ tweaks see this post in our FAQ: http://www.orbxsystems.com/forum/topic/17144-terrain-max-autogen-tweaks/?hl=terrain_max_autogen

The basics of the autogen placement/density system haven't changed in P3D so this applies to both FSX and P3D.

Cheers, Holger

Also, it would be interesting to know whether non-draw-call-batched 3D model scenery objects can still be rendered at run time in P3Dv3.x et. seq. ...when placed as 'custom' autogen annotations. :coffee:
