• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Drawback of not sharing scenery source

Hi!
One drawback of not sharing all source information and code, is when we get new FS-versions. Scenery made for older FS-version don't work, and the developers of those, have left the FS community.

If we instead had all the original image files, gmax-files etc. the work of converting those old sceneries or aircrafts, would be much easier.

Hi,

That reasoning is true of course, but if we would share our work like that people could also easily take our hard work and modify it a bit and then say it it theirs.

I guess this could work if it was released under some sort of open source license that requires everybody that uses it to share the sources as well.

But I also understand that people who spend thousands of hours on a big addon don't want to give all the sources away for free (even if they release the product as freeware).

All freeware projects have same sort of problems. Some steal the code and says it's theirs. But the majority of people are not thiefs.

In all freeware project some people spend thousands of hours on the subject. Many freeware project have code repositories on the net. Anyone can download the source code and contribute with their work. But not so in scenery projects.

What's the difference between FS scenery/aircraft projects and other freeware projects?

I can't see any difference.
