• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Editing existing projects

I'm very new... I have a seaplane hangar with a dock located on a lake. (I used the 'simplescenery' file structure as seen on the YouTube videos from FlyingTheson) and the project was complete, the 'Save Scenery' was saved to the 'Scene' folder, the 'Build' (in the inspector window) was done which created the .bgl and the package was dropped into the community folder. When I restart FS and fly to the lake my hangar is there as it should be. All is good.
Now I want to edit that project and add another dock next to the first one but don't know the procedure. I try to load in the save file from the Scene folder but it gives me the 'cannot be loaded' error. I just want a step by step instruction if there is a way to do this.

Thanks in advance..
Richard
I would start with the Flying Theston videos on youtube:

Thanks John..
I was always trying to bring in the xml from the Scene folder and from there my errors cascaded.
Now to edit my scenery I do the following:

-In the community folder, delete the package folder
-In the project folder delete the _PackageInt, PackagesMetadata, and Packages folders.
-Go to the scenery location
-In the SDK goto Tools, Project Editor, Project, Open Project.
-Down carot the top level XML and click on the BGL file
-In the Inspector window, 'load in editor'.

Voila... there was my project that I can edit.

Thanks again.
Richard

I can't work out how you do that. for a start not sure about the word carot, maybe a typo.
Secondly where is the BGL file? AFAIK the only BGL file (a 'compiled' file created during BUILD) would be in the Packages folder which you deleted.
Maybe you have imported a BGL from somewhere else into your project, something I have never seen.
Anyway if it works for you then that's the main thing.

I don't know where the .bgl is coming from then.... As a test, I made a test hangar at an airport, then edited it using the procedure I posted above.

First, I delete 'hangarone' (my test hanger) from my community folder so it's no longer there as shown in the attached photo 'rms-comm.png'.
Second, I go to the project folder and delete the _PackageInt, PackagesMetadata, and Packages folders as shown in photo rms-hangarone.png.
Third, I start FS2020 and as expected my hangar is no longer at the airport since its not in the community folder.
Fourth, I go to the project editor, open project, and select the top level XML 'hangarone.xml' as shown in 'rms-openproj.png.
Fifth, as shown in the 'rms-bgl.png photo, I select the 'carot' (arrow to the left of the top level XML) which reveals two bgl files.
Sixth, I highlight the top BGL then 'Load In Editor' and my test hangar appears as shown which I can edit.

I have no idea where that BGL comes from since its not anywhere in the project folder.

I have a feeling from your post that the BGL should not appear...

Richard

The last screen shot says it all.
You aren't selecting an actual BGL file you are selecting the BGL ASSET group in your project.
YES that is the way to LOAD IN EDITOR your project including any placements you have previously saved (select the BGL asset group and then click on LOAD IN EDITOR in the INSPECTOR 'window'). Nothing much else will load your previously saved placements IMHO.
You mentioned that you have two BGL asset groups -
Not sure why you have two BGL asset groups. During my learning I ended up with two BGL asset groups and then I could not access all of my polygons, aprons etc at the same time so unless you have a specific reason for doing so could cause you editing problems. Someone else more knowledge than I do can perhaps explain this for you.

I don't know why. When I was practicing on the SDK's 'SimpleScenery' to place their built in light I always ended up with two BGL's. Oh well.... It's working and I want to again say thanks for your help. You really did help me.

Richard

I think that when I ended up with two BGL assets I added something like a polygon to an existing project BEFORE I selected the BGL in the existing project and doing a LOAD IN EDITOR and then when I saved I was prompted to navigate to where I wanted the scenery file and then entering a name for the file. In fact I am fairly sure that is what happened.
So if you don't want two BGL assets when using SDK's 'SimpleScenery' then before adding anything select the BGL and LOAD IN EDITOR before creating anything.

I had started from 'scratch' to create my project following a tutorial by mamu which creates all the folders and files which would exist in SDK's 'SimpleScenery'.

Ahhh.. Got it. I'll try that. Thanks.

I am wondering if existing projects can be edited/modified after placing a model.
I created a project did a BUILD, then placed a model and then saved the scenery (to create a 'scenery'/xml file in my 'scenery/placement' folder).
Later I opened the project thinking that my placed model would appear but it didn't however I did get an error stating that the 'placement' BGL file did not exist in the Packages\.\Scenery\ .\'scene' folder. There was a file in the subfolder but an small file with no filetype.
Was I also supposed to also do a BUILD before I exited?
If so can the project then be modified, eg the placement of the model modified.
I could not find any tutorial on youtube and assume that existing projects after a build can be modified?
Hi... I have just seen these messages about editing an existing project. I've been trying to relocate scenery after a blender project has been done and a SDK project created. I have had the same problem. Slowly working it out. I do a Build initially and get the scenery object in the Objects window and position it precisely where I want it but when I hit the SAVE Scenery button in the SDK Scenery Editor, I get the Directory window and there is no info to say where I should be putting the file.. Do I jusr override the xml file adjacent to the bin and gltf files in the ProjectResources thread. Thats what I've been doing but when I go to do another Package Build, MSFS20 always crashes. Any ideas ??
