• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX EDVK Kassel-Calden 2014

Hi all,

after finishing my first scenery project EDAH Heringsdorf 2013 for FS9 and getting real great feedback from the community it's time for the next project.

This time I'll do my home airport EDVK Kassel-Calden for FSX. It's an all new airport that opened just a few months ago in April 2013. It's a nice B737/A320 destination with a 2500m/45m runway.

The scenery will include custom mesh, custom landclass and HIRES groundimages with accurate placed autogen.
And this time I'll push the poly count a bit. I was very careful with poly count when I modeled the Heringsdorf scenery objects. Especiallly the airport vehicles will get more details in EDVK.

This screenshot shows the actual scenery state in FSX  The satellit image is just used for the first development steps. It will be replaced by a 100% handdrawn groundimage later.

Cheers Volker

this is great.

can you also point me in the right direction about how you did that? i need to work on an airport that faces the same kind of elevation situation! :D

Agreed! Do you have links to tutorials? Or is this just hidden somewhere in the dark corners of the SDK?

Great job Volker!
I never been to Kassel-Calden, so I am very curious how this one will turn out.

I'll try...since it seems not to be possible to model such a detailed ground mesh, I combined some standard elements and got the result I wanted:

1) On top you see a FS8 style groundpoly which has the shape of the green border line.
2) Underneath there's a (now invisible) flatten poly whose shape also corresponds to the green line roughly. It has the exact height of the airport and 'holds' the groundpoly.
3) The hill sides are made of FS9 style model objects (automatic seasons texture switch)
4) On the bottom you see native FSX photoscenery.

So I used scenery creation methods of three FS generations. But at the end it works.

Hope this helps,
Bye Volker

Great work!

I'm not sure if I understand it right, you flatten in the area of runway and the rest of it is the default mesh. The hill in ground poly to cover the default terrain that generated by FSX.

Living in Göttingen, this is almost my home field too!

:)

Great to see someone working on the new Calden. I can only hope the airport actually gets used in the real world to justify the money that was spent on its development.

Are you seeing any of the FS9 surfaces through the FS8 surface? I was having this issue at low view angles in a scenery I was making with elevation.

Looks great!

Yes, first I saw the white color of the surfaces inside the hill-side model on certain low view angles! Especially during takeoff in cockpit view when the plane left ground at the very end of the runway. But after I removed any material of these inside surfaces that viewing bug was not visible any more. Or at least not noticable any more, maybe because all used textures blend very well color-wise...
