• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Hi all.

In another section, I posted a download of a Gmaxed object that uses attachments to add 9 fx_obslight.fx to increase the intensity of the lighting. It works fine, but I did notice a loss of FPS.

As a test, I reworked the effect itself to produce a similar light... 5 instances of the bright phase, instead of one, all offset slightly. The end result was fine, but there was a similar loss of FPS ( averaging almost 1 frame loss over the default fx_obslight.fx ).

Just a warning about the cost of using effects.

Hi Dick,

This is interesting.

I want to do a test where I place a certain effect (light for example) a lot of times in a small area (like placing lighting on an airport) and then see how much frame influence that has.

As we can't use the LIGHT_ options with the new gamepack anymore, effects seem the best options, so I want to know what the frame influence is of placing a lot of effects in a certain area.

Hi Arno.

I think we'll find the framerate hit is considerable.

It looks like altering textures, to give scenery the illusion of light, is the way to go. The experiment is worth a try.. at least we'll know.

Hi Dick,

That is also what I expect. When placing a lot of LIGHT_LAND lights with the Fs2002 gamepack I already noticed that that can have a big influence on the frames.

I just want to try with a small test if I can put some figures on the frame effect.

Using semi-transparant textures to simulate the light effect does not give the desired result as well in all cases, because these polygons are placed on top of the markings etc, and that makes for example the yellow taxilines hard to see.

I guess we'll never have one perfect method :).

I have created some quite heavy amounts of light effects for our new scenery. I am noticing only the same kind of frame drop as the LIGHT_LAND method.

Also, I think the LIGHT_LAND does work if you neame the texture and not the object. (Still testing that).
