• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Fences and Moiree-effects

Got a special fence with "Streckgitter" (Translation could be: meshed metal baffle, or expanded metal). On the top a sloped barbwire. (Wasn´t that easy to get the edges done :) )

OK, definition, etc, also the framerates look good. So no technical problem. The fence is more or less defined in alpha channel technology.

What I do not like: it tends to appear to flicker because it has "Moiree-Effects".

Any advice on how to deal with that?

Loosen up the "weave" of the fence wire. IOW, make the XXX weave larger.

Yes, this is what I already did.
Changed the texturing and did enhance the polygons.
If I would again change the resolution then it wouldn´t look anyhow good if You are are to narrow.
(I didn´t want to show it from the point of the aircraft´s parking position)
The effect itself will not change by this action.
Tried to get ride of it by some of the non documented material names. None of those I know did work.
This might be one of the, from my point of view, possible ways indicated.
From the texturing point of view, or the point of polygons, I think I have done everything I know.

Ensure that you have saved the texture with MIPmaps.

Also, if you have tiled / "overmapped" the UVW's to save polygons whis will exacerbate the moire, as the MIPs will not switch out as early, enhancing the conflicting moire pattern.

If this is the case, consdier adding more polys and remapping the textures less aggressively.

I had good luck with a shimmering fence in FS9 by saving the fence texture as DXT1 w/alpha. Don't know if that works in every case or in FSX, but it solved the shimmering problem in my case and also a draw order problem where objects appearing behind the fence wouldn't show through the fence.

Changed the MipMaps!
That did help a lot.

Want to give a positive feedback and many thanks to the community. All of these hints got me on the right track in the end.

Another thing I have found to be helpful: on the alpha channel of the fence texture do not use pure black for the 'holes' between the wires. Instead use something like 100,100,100. It will cut the shimmer a lot, even without mip maps, and your eye will not notice the difference until you are very close.

cheers.
