• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Flatten does'nt always

I cannot figure this one out - upgrading KDED to make it look like it really is and created a new airport background (after eliminating the old one) with a tag of 'Flatten Mask Class Map Exclude Autogen. Seems to have worked properly but now I find that I have a huge valley in the middle of the airport! Runway 5-23 crosses in mid-air. I thought that Flatten did just that - made a flat surface inside the whole of the airport background. What am I doing wrong? It has been quite a while since I played with scenery design and this is the first for FSX, and could use some assistance.
Thanks,
Fred Z

How did you eliminate the old background, and why did you flatten it again? was the default airport ok which should be reasonably flat?
do you have any addons at all like mesh or landclass for this area?

I wanted the background to mor closely match the actual outline on google earth and I thought I would need to have a new flatten call out. I used the technique in the tutorial suggested (I think). I will resort back to the MS layout to see if the problem goes away. I can live with this as the project is for my own use but I would like to know what I am doing wrong. Thanks for all suggestions.

You can also use the boundary fence as your marker, then work outwards from it, try using "Mask Class Map Exclude Autogen" to see if that gives you what you need first
"Usually" there is no need to flatten the airport as its already been done for you, but Jim's tutorial may be the way to go

Problem solved! Added a Airport Background Tagged 'Flatten' covering the problem area and the valley went away. Thank you for all the suggestions. It is hard to come back after ten plus years of not doing this stuff.
