• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FS9 objects in P3D

I have been trying to install some locally produced FSX scenery into P3DV2.3 however some objects do not appear. I believe that this is due to some of the objects being FS9 objects. What exactly prevents them being displayed? If this is so is there anyway that these objects can be upgraded/converted to a format that P3D would accept?

You can load them with ModelConverterX and export them in FSX format. After placing them again they should be visible in FSX and also P3DV2.x

Just read your thread and also -"What you can do is import these objects with modelconverterx which is available here at fsdeveloper and export them as MDL file in P3D format. These objects are then visible in P3D. If you keep the GUID's of the object the placement file should still work." but can you go a bit deeper into your explanation for me please?

I am trying to convert MAIW Scenery Libraries with MCX so that I can populate my RAF airfields but cannot get anything to appear even though I've spent hours converting .bmps to .dds, exporting files as P3Dbgl, .mdls etc but no joy!

I'm using P3Dv2.4 and have migrated all or most of my FSX scenery into it with Estonia Migration Tool and no problem, its the MAIW airfields that are lacking building detail.

Can you give me a quick step-by-step guide, please?

I currently do not have too much time for a detailed manual or video to explain that. But perhaps some more hints can also help you.
But first of all, please only do that process and publish it, if you have the rights to do so. If you are the author it is no problem otherwise try to get the permission from the author.
You need two tools which are both available here at fsdeveloper.
  • With ModelConverterX load the BGL-file which contains the FS9 library of MAIW objects. You can now step through the library and save them again as MDL-files in P3D format. Take care that the parameter "Keep GUID is on".
  • With LibraryCreatorXML make a new library and add all objects you saved with MCX. Compile the library as BGL-File.
  • Delete the original Library-BGL file from the scenery folder and place the new one you just created with LibraryCreaterXML
This should work, perhaps there is a more easy way with the batch converter of MCX but I never tested that because I normally had to change some things in the models.
Hope that helps
Jörg

Vielen Dank, Jorg, you are a gent! Done what you suggested and buildings are now popping up on my airfields. I've had no trouble in the past with creating airfields and traffic with ADE and AIFlightPlanner this is the first time I have gone deeper into Scenery building using Instant Scenery 3.

Hi Nige,
I know this is an old thread but I am now looking to import MAIW into P3D. I was wondering if you succeeded at all and if so are you able to detail the steps you took?

Cheers

Harry

Hi Harry

Your e-mail got me scratching my head about your query as its been a while since I've converted any MAIW.bgls but I did succeed in converting most of the French MAIW airforce scenery such as hangars etc into P3Dv2.4 following Jorg's advice above. You will need ModelConverterX and LibraryCreaterXML available from FSDeveloper.

I'm currently running P3Dv2.6 at the moment and you have given me the impetus to modify some of the Belgium Airbase which I've neglected for a while so I'll have to do a revision of the conversion process and have another go!

Regards

Nigel
