• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

FSX FSX ground poly gap

Hi all

I have a problem using the FSX "Cap holes" modifier ground poly method. In FSX it shows a thin line between the two planes joined with the help of the "cap holes" modifier (description in the wiki). In Gmax the thin line or the gap is not visible. There is only one vertex point so there is nothing to weld (?). If I move the vertex point the whole poly is moving. So fare we diminished the problem with adjusting the color of the terrain beneath. Any ideas how to get rid of the gap?

Thanks in advance!

Cheers

Andreas

Hi,

Did you do any tweaking to the ground polygons later on or not?

First I used multiple levels with different LOD's to prevent flickering, now we have discovered your ground poly wizard to place it without flicker and without shadow problem :).

Otherwise I don't use tweaks at all.

Hi,

So in that case it might also be the ground polygon wizard that gave the edge and not your work in gmax. Did you enter the exact altitude in meters of your airport in the wizard?

Thank you Arno for your support, fortunately I could solve the problem meanwhile thanks to Ian Routley:

Andreas,

With regard to the edge/cap holes question.

This is usually due to the bug in the way FSX handles Mipmaps is it not?

To put it another way, if the geometry is all welded (no free edges underneath, and only single vertices along the junction) the only thing left is the texture.

As the texture Mips out, it creates a gap on each side, usually requiring "under-UVmapping" by at least 5 pixels, on each side. Possibly more for a non-square texture.

That's was it: I just had to remap the edge line part with taking care that while mapping I had a few pixels tolerance to avoid the gap effect.

This information might be helpful for others too who encounter this problem.

Cheers

Hi,

Yep, this even happens to aircraft that are mapped right to the edge of the textures.

This even happens when using Sketchup,.. if you take the texture to just the edge of... you can get gaps.
