• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX SDK question

I loaded SDK (?)...edited dll.xml...fired up SFX and nothing around. How do I start the program to design new scenery????

First stop is to read the SDK documents which are installed with the SDK (youll have to remember where you installed the SDK).....

Read them and then get back to us with specific questions - It is too large to give a useful overview (or at least a better one than is outlined in the SDK documents) and we cant do the work for you- You need to put in some effort at the start

TIP: The SDK isnt one program- its a series of small programs, each one does a different thing...most of it is command line based

If you mean the Mission Object Placement tool, you should find it in the Tools menu in FsX.

Thanks......great help!!!Timmo!...I do read you know, and by the way, I defenitly don´t want you to do any work for me...Bye amigo.............

Arno, that´s the thing I do not get a "tools" menu in FSX. Could it be a bad installation? I noticed this yesterday when I started followings Abacus manual for their free object placement tool.
Thank you.

If you don't see the tools menu, then you have probably not edited the dll.xml file correctly.

First of all, if you are running FSX + SP1, be aware that you also need to install the NEW SDK SP1a in order for the new "tools" to appear.

If you are certain that you've installed the SDK SP1a , then check the path information in the dll.xml file to make sure it's actually pointing to the correct directory/folder structure.

If you installed the SDK to the "default location," it's entirely possible that your system (like mine) simply doesn't like that rediculously long path with all the spaces:

<Path>..\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK\SDK\Environment Kit\Traffic Toolbox SDK\traffictoolbox.dll</Path>

First, try adding the full path including the Drive letter to the path:

<Path>C:Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK\SDK\Environment Kit\Traffic Toolbox SDK\traffictoolbox.dll</Path>

If that doesn't work for you, try uninstalling the SDK, then reinstalling to a shorter path such as "C:\FSX_SDK"...

As for your reaction to Timmo's reply, take a chill pill. Your question was extremely vague and gave every appearance of being a "typical newbie who hasn't a clue" type post. None of us here are mind readers...

If you want an accurate, precisely targeted reply, then you really need to provide a more specific question! :coffee: :)

Thank you n4gix.....
You have given me an interesting clue. Yes I have the new NEW SDK SP1, I also have Vista which is quite tricky in folder naming. Your logic sounds correct I will disinstall SDk and re-install in another folder with a shorter name...

Arno, I had a hell of a time finding the dll, again Vista is a hussle when things are not exactly where they are suppose to be!!!!! and it took me about four tries to change it since for some reason or other the OS wanted me to get more permission besides adm to do it.....I should have told Acer to change the Vista for XP when I bought this PC!!!!
Thanks guys, I will fight this "gator" by myself....there is always an answer..

n4gix...I took the chill pill :stirthepo you prescribed But I have been taught since little that "manners" are part on civilization and trying to be "smart" is of very bad taste in any part of this wide wonderful world......Oh, yes I am a newe in this craft for I have been doing scenery work only about three months...anyway I will try to be more explicit in the future:tapedshut....and most happy to say there are great people here, the best...

Oh, I don't disagree with the need to be polite! In fact, my manners would make even the most rigid hidalgo appear crude and boorish! ;)

On the other hand, I having been around for many decades, Ive learned to read between the lines. In my estimation, Timmo's reply was "terse and factual" to be sure, but not "smart ..." at all.

Having to provide "product support" for the models and gauge systems I build for Eaglesoft, I can't begin to tell you how absolutely maddening it is when someone sends an email asking me to "...explain to me in detail how this <insert anything here> feature works."

I want SO MUCH to be able to reply to such folks, "Dude, you can't be bothered to READ the extensive documentation already provided with your purchase, but now you expect me to believe that you'll actually READ the same freakng information if I type it all out again in this email?"

But alas, I cannot! Such is the reality of commerce...
