• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX-SE AI Aircraft Flying Behaviour

Hey guys
I have recently moved from FSX Boxed version to Steam.
I have an odd issue since changing where some but not all my AI aircraft appear to take turns at flying very strangely.
To cure it I copy the technical part of the Aircraft.cfg from my original into the current, reload sim and it cures it but then
when i next run the sim the same aircraft does it again.
The only thing I have noticed though is the Aircarft.cfg is changed as per my example below for the HTAI Cessna Skyhawk and only the part as shown below.
Original part
[General]
atc_type=SKYHAWK
atc_model=silent
editable=1
performance=HTAI Aircraft
Category=airplane
Then after reload and the aircraft behaing oddly the .cfg part looks like this

[General]
atc_type=SKYHAWK
atc_model=silent
editable=1
performance=HTAI Aircraft/HTAI Aircraft/HTAI Aircraft/HTAI Aircraft/HTAI Aircraft/HTAI Aircraft/
Category=airplane

That line can be one addition or a hundred.

I am beginning to think it is a bug but I had no issue prior to loading Steam.
I run ORBX and UK2000 scenery but have tried swapping that around but the same.
Could it be FS9 AI aircraft behaving badly in FSXSE/
Any help would be appreciatred.

FS9 AI will rarely work unconverted in FSX or P3D. You don't describe the strange behaviour or the process you're using to update the aircraft.cfg file - or what logical process you used to decide that was the cure.

Why are you using an FS9 AI aircraft in FSX?

Thanks for your reply.
So I use a mix of both FS9 and FSX AI aircraft in FSXSE and prior to going to Steam I never had any issues with the flight behaviour.
Sorry my description was very basic but when certain aircraft taxi, they taxi nose up, nose down,very erratic steering and when they eventually reach a runway they simply do not take off, start to roll and rather veer onto the grass or wherever.
When I do see an aircraft in flight they are upside down with no level flight or spinning to the ground.
My pattern of thought was to simply go back to an original Aircraft.cfg and replace the current one, this appeared to do the trick when i started the Sim until after I closed down it reverted back to the erratic behaviour.
On checking the .cfg I noted the change as i referred to earlier from this "performance=HTAI Aircraft" to this " performance=HTAI Aircraft/HTAI Aircraft/HTAI Aircraft/HTAI Aircraft/HTAI Aircraft/HTAI Aircraft/" etc etc and that I assumed was something to do with the problem I was having, what or why is that change happening when i dont physically edit the .cfg myself.
I did wonder if it could be FSXSE as I had no such issues with these aircraft in FSX.
The only issue I had with FS9 in FSX was the squre balck props which I sorted but certainly no flight problems.
Interestingly the time I went onto Steam I upgraded my PC and had Windows 11 installed but that could be a coincidence.
As a matter of interest why can I not use AI Fs9 aircraft in FSX unless they are converted?

Further to my last post this is todays gem

All behaving well, then shut down the sim.

Loaded FSXSE and watched the same aircraft and off it went,nose up,nose down and spinning.
Closed FSXSE and checked aircraft.cfg and got this

Not exactly sure but this, for some reason seems to be causing the issue or it is the only thing that i can find changes.
Never experienced this with FS98,2000,2004 or FSX Boxed and to date 2020 but then thats a different kettle of fish. It is not every aircraft but close.
Frustrated

Have you got FSX and FSX:SE installed on the same computer? If so, I suspect (without identifying the exact mechanism at play) that that is the cause of your issues.

I used to have that going on without issue Tim. All three in fact because I was developing for P3D and SE and my old FSX was full of valuable unique stuff. By "without issue" It's pertinent that I was not constrained to the conditions described above.
performance=HTAI Aircraft/HTAI Aircraft/HTAI Aircraft/HTAI Aircraft/HTAI Aircraft/HTAI Aircraft/
This, to me, suggests a paths issue. It suggests that you had it installed for FSX box and when you went to SE, the software still refers to the old installation and it has to go through a bunch of paths until it finds it. This is only guessing, but a delay of the extra searching could cause issues. It seems like the base build of whatever version FSX you use should be installed first, then the addons that depend on it, because they establish paths that need to be valid. Anyway it's just an observation, you've probably already covered all of this. If not, it might be something to look into.

When I got FSXSE I had already Uninstalled FSX Deluxe but I wonder if there was something left on my system.
The performance= line is the only change that appears to occur but I doubt that is why the aircraft performs like a ballet dancer.
Anyway I think I will see if I can find anything obvious and then possibly do a complete uninstall of both and then start again.
I'm no expert but being a Scorpio I will get to the bottom of it.
Thanks for the input.

Yes, I've done the same, Rick - but I did have some issues with having boxed and SE on the same computer, and eventually I decided that it wasn't worth keeping both. I don't remember any similar AI issues, but I agree it sounds like pathing being corrupted by the two installations interfering with each other.

Hey guys thought I would update you on my AI aircraft dancing issues.
After frustratingly working on the issue manually I decided to ask AI and they pointed to the fact that and for reasons I can't fathom that AIFP3 was or is causing the problem.
What it does for some reason it alters the Aircraft.cfg wingspan value from say 36 down to 1.
After making plans for an HTAI Cessna172 I then opened Fsxse and noted the 172 taxied with its nose up and then down and then once it had reached the runway it simply rolled down the runway and never took off.
On checking the Aircraft.cfg the wingspan value had decreased to 1.
I then changed the value back to what it should be opened up the simulator and the same Aircraft taxied out and took off with no issues.
According to ChatGpt there isn't a problem with Aifp2 but seemed the issue is within Aifp3
At this point please note Aifp3 is an excellent program and I use it all the time but wondered if someone knew of this and wondered if there was a fix.
Cheers
