• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX - Texture - 3D Objects no showing the texture

Hi all, My name is Marco Almeida. I´ve been modeling for FS2004 for so time now and just mirgated to FSX and decided do start modeling for this new platform.

But right at the start I am already having problem with texture viewing in FSX.

The problem is that after modeling, creating texture, mapping, unwrapping in 3ds, setting the FriendlyName and GUID and going through the exporting and whole process of converting into BGL, when I load the object using the Object Placemente Tool, it appears all black.

The texture file extension I tried both .BMP, .DDS; and the format I tried DXT1, DXT3 and DXT5. All give me the same result: all black. I also created the mip maps.

So is it something wrong I´m doing at the modeling stage???? Or is it something wrong I am doing when converting the .PSD into DDS or BMP with Imagetool???

Anyone can help???

Thanks,
Marco Almeida.

Hi,

I meant: do you use phototextures or not ?
But as I don't use 3DS I think other designers can better guide you further.

Hi Marco,

I assume you have already verified that the textures are the correct folder and things like that?

I might help to try to figure out if the texture actually ended up in your MDL file. This can be a bit hard to see, but if you open the MDL file in notepad you should be able to see the names somewhere in all the weird symbols :).

Hi there, Arno,

yes I placed the texture at the correct place. I put the BGL at the Addon Scenery\Scenery folder and the texture at the Texture folder. Is this correct?

I didn´t know it´s possible to check the MDL file, even been a bit hard to figure out de codes.. Anyway, I´ll try to find it and soon I´ll reply here, ok???

Thanks,
Marco Almeida.

Arno,

the MDL file mentions the texture. But now something came into my mind....
I named the texture: amigãolateral.DDS So, my question is: is the "ã", the tilde a problem in texture naming???

Im not sure if that is the problem specifically, but it is always good practice to stick to the old file naming conventions

i.e. No spaces (use _ instead), limited number of characters, dont start filenames with a number, no wierd symbols etc....

I would suggest renaming your files regardless...

Hi,

I put the BGL at the Addon Scenery\Scenery folder and the texture at the Texture folder. Is this correct?

Let's specify: ADDON SCENERY/Your scenery/scenery map and ADDON SCENERY/Your scenery/texture map. Goes into Your scenery/texture map.

Why not start making your texture again ?
1. 24 bits 256x256 extended bitmap goes into GMAX/maps
2. convert the extended bitmap in DXTBmp into extended bitmap with format DXT1.

Use short names or number or any other code as mentioned before. (hangar.bmp; 1234.bmp of H1234.bmp)

Timmo, Arno and all who posted, thank for the help, but finally I managed to solve the problem.

Simple, when creating the texture in PS I was saving it in 24bits and then in Imagetool I was just converting directly to DXT3.

I just saved the PSD as BMP and selected the 32bit depth and the Imagetooled to DXT3.. and Voilá!!!!! The object is perfect now in FSX!!!!!!

At last!!!!

Best regards to all, and once again: THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Marco,

Why don't you load the PSD file directly into ImageTool? That allows you to save it as DXT/DDS right away. Might save one conversion in between.

But good to hear it is working now of course :).
