• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Fusing Shapes Together in GMax

I'm in the process of making a more complicated building model and although I'm getting a feel for the features in gmax, there are still a few things I need help with.

First, Since I had to use multiple boxes and shapes to make this building , is there any way that I can fuse these shapes together so they're considered 1 object rather that many?

Second, Is there any way to clean up gaps that may exist between objects. It seems no matter how much I try to work them, there's always tiny gaps between the shapes. Is there any provision in gmax to fix this?

1. Select one object.
2. Right-click and choose Attach
3. Select another object from the pick list
4. In vertex sub-mode, select a set of intersecting vertices
5. Click on the Weld button
6. Repeat with all remaining intersecting vertices

Now, repeat the above process with all remaining objects you wish to merge into a single object.

Note: do not wait so long in the future. Attach & Weld as you build.

Incidently, the above process will also solve the "gap problem."
 
The Align tool can help get things joined up -- since it works with object minimums and maximums though it won't align odd shapes. You can in fact Align vertices, which is very useful, but generally I'd not worry too much about it -- you can extend one object into another slightly, which certainly gets rid of gaps. This is ok for things like your verandah supports, but not ideal for the rest of the building. For that, I'd use n4gix's method.
Ultimately, it may be easier to just model one shape from scratch -- you won't get any gaps, and the final model will have a lot less vertices, without all the joining and welding.

Incidentally, your roof has smoothing applied, which may not be what you want. The tutorial shows how to deal with this as well.
