• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

General question on updating FSX scenery libraries

Hello,

Sorry for the simple question, but what's the quickest way to update scenery libraries? Is it always necessary to have to restart FSX each time once new .BGL files have been created and placed in the Add-on scenery folder?

I read in a magazine it should be possible to re-run the library indexing from within FSX without having to completely shutdown and restart FSX (which takes time), but I always get a message saying the files are in use.

Thanks
Mark

Hi Mark,

You can indeed assign a shortcut to the command "Reload scenery". But I don't find that very useful, as FSX keeps the BGL files in use when running. So that means I can not recompile a new version and copy it in.

What I normally do for a test area is that I make a saved flight at that location that I set as default flight. Then after restarting I am right back where I was. Then it goes relatively quick.

You can make a scenery area inactive, copy in the files, and reactivate it, but I find it just as fast or faster to do a restart.

Restarting is the only way I know of being sure that everything updates.

Thanks Guys.

I already have the flight saved, but it looks like I have to be patient in having to restart FSX each time.

Thx
Mark

Hello:

FSX takes way too long to re-load and re-start a saved flight on my older FS development/testing computer, so I use "Unlocker" to unshackle myself from excessive waiting:

http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/

Here's how to do this with Unlocker's help:

After Unlocker is installed, create a shortcut to Unlocker.exe in the active Windows Profile/Account/User "Send To" Folder Menu.

Now the FS "live update" process ...all done mid-flight in FSX:

1.) In My Computer > Windows Explorer, select file/folder to be updated in FSX

2.) Right-click file/folder to be updated > "Send To" Unlocker

3.) Click "Unlock All" to release file/folder to be updated from any listed app "locking" the file/folder (Ex: FSX, Explorer etc.)

4.) Perform desired file/folder "update" operation (NOTE: This nearly always allows complaint-free over-writes!) ;)

<-- Next two steps only required if file/folder is for current FSX flight scenario area ! -->

5.) Go to FSX Menu > World > Scenery Library

6.) Un-check, then immediately re-check any listed scenery area to toggle Scenery.cfg re-index attribute status; click OK

FSX now re-indexes, re-loads and/or re-caches new file(s), and... restores one's flight scenario at the point paused! :D

PS: New files (not over-writes) added to "active" FSX \Scenery folders will now be read/displayed too! :wizard:

Hope this helps! :)

I only do number 5.) Go to FSX Menu > World > Scenery Library then OK and it updates everything except newly created textures.

And you can update textures by going to Options/Settings/Display/Hardware and moving the Global Texture slider by one notch. Make sure it is left at Massive when you finish editing, though. This is FS9, but it works in FSX as well, I believe.

Oh Great tips!!! I used to only restart fsx when I add a new texture file into my scenery. :D
