• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Gents,

I was playing around with w Gmax and GIMP and its effect:

But I have a problem w alpha channel. Areas where I want alpha are white.

I found on internet tutorial how to add alpha ch in GIMP, done everything step by step but looks like it doesn work.

its fine in Gimp but Gmax doesn't see alpha, nither dxtbmp.

Probably I did something wrong but don't know what. I appretiate any suggestions, tutorials etc.

regards
Mike

To my knowledge, GMax will only show you white or black for the alpha, put it onto FS and see what happens, it may work then.

I know just as much as you, but you appear to know how to create crisp looking textures, fancy showing/telling me how? Thanks

Photoshop user here:

Gmax won't render alpha transparency for most texture formats (including psd, which I typically use)

Similarly DXTBmp won't directly read the alpha channel for these formats.

The exception (from memory) is .tga

You could try saving your textures in tga with alpha format, there may be a box for alpha source in the Gmax Map rollout (ie near where you specify the texture) ... I think it is not only in Max.

If you wish to use .psd textures, then a simple export, then a viewing of the mdl file with Arno's modelconverterX is the way to go. This will render the transparency pretty well, without having to start the sim.
In this case, use the fsx Imagetool to convert to dds (try setting up some shortcuts with the different CLI options for each texture type)

@hcornea

You were right. Saving in PSD help alot. Problem solved

Little touch-up and will be ok.
