• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

GMAX does not open my project anymore :yikes: :yikes: :yikes:

Just a "file open failed" !!!!!

PLEASE - does anybody know what to do? about 40 hours of work are in that file!!!!!

Eeek, Georg, that sucks. gmax does keep a backup file in your gmax program folder in a folder called "autoback". It may be there, but first copy the contents of that folder to a temp folder. You may overwrite the last auto backup when you try and open something.

. . and when you're back up again, I suggest turning on incremental saves:

Customize pulldown-->Preferences-->Files tab-->check "increment on save" and make sure "backup on save" is checked as well.

With "increment on save" on you will get a new version everytime you save, with a two digit suffix. Eg "My Project07". Helps to recover earlier stuff you did as well.

And then make darn sure you back up to CD or DVD often.

Jon

Unfortunately I worked with another file today, so the autobackup from the crashed file was already gone

I switched on already the incremental save ... too late :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Try this....

Start a new file and then do a "merge", select objects from the corrupt file...and cross your fingers.

Good luck,
Bob

Double eeek. Well, unless anyone else has ideas, there is a bright side: I find that when I redo projects from scratch the result is much better.

Small consolation though. Tough break.

I have found that gmax is pretty reliable but it does flake out often enough to make backups crucial.

Good luck!

Jon

Hi Bob - already tried - does not help. I also sent the file to someone else and he cannot open it either  :(

@Jon: Thanks - maybe you're right, but nevertheless it's hard to loose about 20 hours of work!

 Also have this problem this morning! :banghead: :banghead:

It's impossible to open or merge the GMax-object. Although I can see it properly in the preview-window. (Oh, I just see that this is only a snapshot of the work).

Could you solve it, Georg? (please say yes!! :D )

Good luck the object wasn't too big and I can actually use it in my scenery, but I would have needed it to fit other objects around it.

I thought I used autobackup, but it seems that this option doesn't work anymore. Whatfor is the number of Autobak files? Is "3" OK?
Why does GMax stop making autobackups although the function is enabled?

Hi Thorsten :(

Sorry - the only solution I found is to let GMAX make autobackups

Preferences -> File -> File Handling -> "Backup on save" and "Increment on save" enabled.

However - there is a small possibility, another user could open it and save it again ... you've got a pn!

Thanks alot!

The "Increment on save" was disabled. :o

GMax is still the most incredible "love" of my life. So much time I spend with it, and so much I don't know about it... :D

Hi.

People make regular backups of your work outside "gmax".
You can't build on auto-backup.
"gmax" is very reliable software.
Error message: "file open failed".
Your file is corrupt.
The "timed autoback files" are saved as Autobak1.gx etc.
Did you try to open one of these ?
And how did you set "Number of Autobak files" ?
By default, you can't see all the autosaved files unless you change the spinner at the bottom to display "9".
Autobak1.gx Autobak2.gx .............Autobak9.gx
Just change Autobak9.gx to Autobak9.gmax and you have the last auto save.
Hope this helps.

Yes, I tried all of those things. But I had used too much other files, so this one didn't have a backup.

I learned my lesson... :o

Is it normal that GMax now asks me about the filename everytime I want to save manually?

No this is not normal.
You can safe your file pointing to the menu "File":
There are 3 options:
1. Save
2. Save As
3. Save Selected
The first option overwrites your excisting safed file.
The second option does open a window and you can see the previous filename already given by your first save.
The third option you can select parts of your created scene.
Try to make a clean install of "gmax".

... and if you enable "increment on save", you get a new file with a higher number attached to the file name when you press "save".

Yes this is true.
Very usefull by backingup your files.

Yes, that is what I meant. But that means that I create a huge number of files just for one object.

I thought this option would help creating autobackup, which seems to work only when GMax crashes.

Anyway, I got the idea - thanks. :)
