• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

I know blender pretty well. I know Maya pretty well. Now GMAX is a newer animal that I have recently started using. *Unfortunately I havent been able to correlate much and have had a pretty difficult time finding a 'usable' beginners guide that also includes keypress map and what symbols mean what. If anyone can point me in that direction, would be great.

Currently for my models I use Sketchup and Blender to create, export and conversion gets kind of tricky and results are not always the same or intended (i.e. wall longer than intended, higher on 1 side than the other when exported to DAE or similar format).

Maya 6 I havent found a useful tool for conversion that doesnt cost upwards of $500. Plus I havent used it in 5 years so it would be re-learning as I go for the intricate stuff.

GMAX seems like its a great tool and much can be done, but a learning curve is to be tackled first. Ready to dive into this program much deeper than I already have. Search here turns up results with broken links or tutorials for people who already know the keymap and symbology. I need the keymap and symbology more than anything. The 'Whats this button do' approach doesnt work too well for Gmax. It did for blender and Maya. Sketchup is a preschool program in my opinion, but functions well for the price :)

The Help system in GMAX is the great resource for this -- start with the User Interface section, and you can click through to a detailed explanation of every button, menu and rollout.

The best resource for me is a book -- the GMAX Bible. This has all the detail you could possibly want, although it doesn't cover the FSX features. I've used this for 10 years, so it has had a lot of use, luckily it comes with a searchable PDF version, which I use these days.
