• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Gmax model to Sketchup format

Hi Folks,

As some of you may have heard, Jon Patch passed away Febuary 22 after a long illness. (See the thread on the Orbx forum if interested.) Jon's last project was to be 'Saltspring Plus' with the Ganges SPB and some other stuff. I did all the ferries and terminals for the area as my freeware part plus several models for him, but as his illness progressed he was no long able to continue work on his Gmax model of the Ganges waterfront. In memory of Jon, I'm thinking of finishing the project but I think it's most appropriate if I use as much of his work as possible.

So the question is whether or not there is a way to convert a Gmax model such that I can import it into Sketchup. If not, at least I can use his textures to preserve the look he created.

Rest In Peace Jon, sad news... :(

I think worth try to convert to MDL from Gmax then load into MCX and then to .3ds that sketchup can read.. Texture should load ok, just make sure that the textures are in the same folder with 3ds file.

Thanks for this. Ah, I did not know that SU could read 3ds files. The problem is that Jon was not happy with the current state of his model and had some idea of what he wanted but was not able to do it. So I would like to have the look as he intended it. Being able to use his work as a base for a larger SU model would make things easier. If not I can just make my own SU model of the same thing and use his textures.
