• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FS2004 GMax Runway problem

Hi all, this is my first message in this Forum.

I am developing an ENSB Svalbard Longyearbean Airport Scenery totally in GMax.
All is ok with 3D buildings, animations, lights...
But I have a problem with the runway.
The runway is a correct ground polygon, but in some cases (prinipally with low eyepoint on the terrain) some parts of my runway disappears and i can see the AFCAD's runway.
The ASM layer of the base asphalt is 10, and it's at 0 on the Z axis.
You can see some screenshots attached.

Is there someone who know how can I solve this problem?
Thank you all,
Luca

Hi Luca,

Did you add a flatten to the area as well? Without that only tweaking the ground polygons with the ADDCAT command is not enough for them to display correctly.

Thank you so much for the fast reply Arno,
I didn't flat the area.
I found I can Flat it editing the file Scenery.cfg, but is there a way to flat the area with a BGL file from XML code, as I did for the exclude area?
Thank you again!

Hi,

I indeed prefer the flatten to be in a BGL file, but it can not be done with a XML file. For FS2004 you need a LWM flatten, SBuilder is a good tool to make these. Or else FsFlatten is an alternative as well.

Fsx kml

Hi,

I use a tool called fsx kml to flatten an area.

(See http://www.scenery.org/graphical_editors.htm for the download).

To use the tool first create a kml file using google earth. To do this start up google earth and go to the airport. Select the add path tool and trace the outline of the airport, select the last point in the path and move it to the same place as the first, this then turns the path into a polygon. On the properties tab of the polygon, set the altitude mode to absolute, and set the altitude to the field elevation. Save the path as a kml file.

Start fsx kml and click the add kml button to load the previously created kml file. Set the description of the polygon to Airport_Backgrounds_Flatten_MaskClassMap_ExcludeAutoGen

Optionally you can also change the airport background by copying the polygon (using the button next to the red X) and then setting the copied item's description to an appropriate land class poly (for example LandClassPoly_Rock_Ice).

Finally build the project by clicking the build tab and the clicking the build button.

Hope this helps

Nice work Luca! I've a couple of photo of ENSB airport which I took last summer, if you're interested just leave me a PM.
I'm very happy that somebody are working on norwegian airport!!

Again, thank you all for your opinions.
I used FSFlatten and that solved my problem;)
Ras78 I will contact you in the next hours, thanks a lot!

Wow, I've looked at that airport before on google earth and stuff. Talk about an island paradise! I was looking for a scenery for it. Will this be for FSX too?

:(

oh well... maybe i can take up modeling the airport in IQALUIT and we can have an entire set of FAR NORTH airfields :D
