• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Gmax view ports partially blocked

I have installed Gmax onto a 17" laptop and noticed in the upper left corner of each viewport, the description I have set up (ie; Top, Left, Perspective, etc.), is partially blacked behind the viewport above it or into the toolbar if it is one of the top two viewports. Resizing of viewports or the entire window makes no difference.

Is anybody else seeing this? Could this be because I have gone from a 3x4 type screen to a "widescreen"?

thx,

Clutch

What o/s.

Which driver are you using (for Gmax)

Have you disabled desktop composition for Gmax (assuming you are using Win7 or Vista)

I'd suggest: DirectX, Disable Desktop Composition and see how you go.

Runs fine under Win7 on my widescreen laptop.

Hey hcornea,

Correct, I am using Win7 64 with DirectX drivers. But where is that "disabled desktop composition for Gmax" you talk about located?

thx,

Clutch

Right-click yous FSX_Gmax Shortcut.

While you're there, you may as well select "Disable visual themes" as well. Perhaps also check "Run as Administrator."

Thx, I woulda been looking for some time to find that. Unfortunately still not working? Even using both of your suggestions guys.

Hi,

Did you try the other drivers in GMax? Maybe not use DirectX, but HEIDI or OpenGL. Which one works best depends on many things, so it is not easy to say which one you should choose. Trying all of them might be a good idea.

Good call Arno... that was it, the drivers.

Looks like Heidi works best. OpenGL appears to make the viewports turn white and start flashing a little when I click on them. It's funny as this laptop has an AMD 5870 Radeon card in there and I see it has an additional page for settings for Gmax while the others don't. Would seem like it would work with DirectX first and foremost

If I may ask, what just is Heidi? I have heard of DirectX and I understand that OpenGL is an "open source" graphics driver?

thx,

Clutch

"Heidi" is a software driver.

You should be able to use DirectX, but it is possible you need to update the driver for your onboard video.

I would agree with Bill's inference that it would be good not to use Heidi.

After using it for a short while, you realise the rendering is Not Quite Right .. the shading is awful ... and if you work at all with transparency maps (yecchh!!)

Heidi is a last resort (IMHO)

On that first note, make sure you max out the loaded bmp sizes and chack (or uncheck) Texture correction ... depending on your preference.

After further testing you are right. The Heidi and OpenGL are not as good as the DirectX. I'll just have to live with that little annoyance as there are no new drivers for the laptop. Other than that DirectX works by far the best so I'll just stick with that.

Funny, I have the same problem. I just noticed it also. Perhaps its been happening since I updated my video card, I'm not sure. Went from a GTS 8800 to a GTX 460. Now I'm seeing this issue.

Its a bit disturbing.

I just updated my drivers to the most recent one, but to no affect.
