• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Going crazy over effects!

I have searched the sdk and forums, but I still can't figure out what I am doing wrong. I'm trying to add heat shimmer from the F-18 onto my F-14 using the fxtool in the game toolbar. I get the effect positioned correctly and it shows up after I exit the tool, but when I restart the game..... no effect.?

I am using FSX Gold with Accel.

Am I supposed to do anything else other than position the effect in fxtool?

I have opened heatshimmer.fx in FXTool.

Adjusted the emitter to the offset values that lets me view the effect in the proper position.

Save As ____.

Then open the desired aircraft's cfg file to add in the effect under smoke.

Do I still need the values in the datum values or does the FXTool store that info so I just need to add the extension..?

I have tried both ways and it still wont work for me.

This is my fist project in effects, i have tried the past two days to figure this out. I still need HELP.

=) i did it!

This is how....

Open the cfg. file for the F-18 with the effect you want (exhaust/heatshimmer). Copy all SmokeSystem entries and paste them in your desired aircrafts cfg. file, replacing whatever was already there.

Since the effects are controlled through gauges, open the Panel.BlueAngels folder and copy the FX folder into your desired aircrafts Panel folder. Then, in the Panel.BlueAngels folder, open panel.cfg file and scroll down to the bottom. You should see this....

//EFFECTS
gauge01=FX!Afterburner,
gauge02=FX!Vapor,
gauge03=FX!EG_Smoke_NORM, 0
gauge04=FX!EG_Smoke_APP,
gauge05=FX!EG_Heat_Shimmer,

Copy and paste this into your desired aircrafts panel.cfg file on the last Vcockpit entry (outside view with color). You will have to change the guage values from gauge 30 something to 01, 02, 03 and so on. Shoud look like this.....

[Vcockpit07]
Background_color=0,0,0
size_mm=512,512

visible=1
pixel_size=512,512
texture=$vcrio1

gauge00=F14D!Riodisplay, 0, 0, 512, 512

//EFFECTS
gauge01=FX!Afterburner,
gauge02=FX!Vapor,
gauge03=FX!EG_Smoke_NORM, 0
gauge04=FX!EG_Smoke_APP,
gauge05=FX!EG_Heat_Shimmer,

windowsize_ratio=1.000
window_pos=0.756,0.358
window_size=0.243,0.641

[Color]
Day=255,255,255
Night=223,255,255
Luminous=246,115,119

[Default View]
X=0
Y=0
SIZE_X=8192
SIZE_Y=3200

Now the effect will work, but you will have to adjust the datum reference point values in the cfg. file to get the effects in the right position. And then change the XML files in the FX folder you pasted to get the effects to show at lower throttle percentage and altitude. Works beautifully for me now.

Conagrats, what could be difficult would be to adjust the values for position if this no match. I have no idea about that, By the way what is Dentum?, could be Datum?:confused:

Datum Reference Point .... I'm an idiot. hahah But an idiot with exhaust! I've been polluting the crap outa that sky =).

Not hard to adjust the Datum Reference Point values. I just changed them laterally from 1.80 and -1.80 to 4.0 and -4.0. Shows up great with Dino's new F-14D.
