• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Hi,

Found a program named grisis50 ( www.scenery.org ) Design Utilities for making greyscale Dem files. In the Readme is mentionned to use Microsoft SDK IV tools in order to obtain the bgl. Meaning BGLComp... and which version ?

Hi Jose,

In general it is the resample tool from the SDK that is used to make terrain BGL files, not BGLComp.

Depending on the area you are modelling, I guess it would be easiest to try to get real DEM data. Creating it yourself does not always work easy.

Sorry, indeed the resamble tool*.
I fear I cannot find a DEM-file detailed enough for what I need... so it would perhaps better to try making it myself or correct the file. It wouldn't be very perfect of course.

I found on the Net a tar.gz file but 3DEM asks to change... and I do not know how or what.
I can find hgt-files but not of the area of the Antarctica.

So I have to choose between FSDEM, 3DEM and grisis50.

Downloaded Winzip and uncompressed the tar-file (there were 8 files and I suppose I only need the .DEM-file in it).

There is although a little problem I think. Look at what I get in Fly by view (3DEM). A nice peace of modern art. :)

although not familiar with that particular file type, youll likely find that the .dem file is just one file of many that makes up the DEM

(similar to how a Shapefile is made up of the *.shp, *.DBF, *.Shx, *.sbn, *.prj etc)

Have meanwhile surfed along numerous threads and sites in de hope to find a solution. :(
For exemple: grises50 needs the resample.exe from Terrain SDK FS2002 (= less buggy than the other versions they say). I found a link... but still no success. It seems I need the right version and I have tried them all.

Maybe someone can send me the right software in total so that I can see if that works also for me. :rolleyes:

Anny suggestions ?

You should be able to locate the SDK's either through flightsim.com's main FS2002 page or it used to be available through fsinsider.com
 
Hi,

I received meanwhile a step-by-step tutorial from a designer and bussy now to study it. ;)

Further: waiting for a height map from an institution and hope they are willing to send such data... otherwise :( to do a fine scenery.
