• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Helicopter Editing Help - Need More Power

Greetings,

I'm trying to learn about FSX, and am interested in modifying a 2002/4 Gmax Airwolf helicopter (Bell 220C). The primary issue is attempting to make it faster/more powerful so that it may begin to approach the performance of this imaginary aircraft:

PERFORMANCE:
cruising speed: 300 knots
maximum speed: Mach One plus 662+ mph (with main rotor disengaged)
maximum ceiling: 86,000 feet

Currently, this aircraft maxes out at about 120knots :/

I have attempted to adjust numerous variables in the aircraft.cfg file, with no result, and also attempted substituting sections from other helicopters that are faster than the 222c, or should have much more powerful engines. No success.

Is there a guide to the aircraft.cfg file for helicopters/rotorcraft? I do not know what variables to modify, nor the limits of these parameters.

Can anyone make any suggestions as to where I can start?

Later, I'll see if I can update the 3D panel.

Well you may be able to increase the speed beyond the 120 kts you're getting but it's not just down to the engine power. You have the blade rpm to consider. That will be fixed somewhere to give a stable and save rpm for the weight and length of the two blades. You can't just make it faster by increasing the power as that just means the engine will drive the blades more efficiently to that rated rpm.

Regarding supersonic speeds, since FS's physics is based upon the real world and not science-fiction, you're not likely to be able to push a helicopter flight model to do things so far beyond what is realistically possible.

There are already a couple of appropriately modified files available.

Great, the one area that I didn't fiddle with was blade, so I'll do some experimentation there.

Well, I sort of suspected that I wouldn't be able to get the top speed anywhere near that high. Even the show puts forth some kind of explanation that Airwolf turns into some kind of high speed jet powered autogyro in order to exceed normal helicopter speeds.

"It's an aerodynamic lifting body with a rotor system, driven by twin turbines, capable of propelling it to three hundred knots. This rotor system can be disengaged to ignite two turbo-thrust boosters, which can increase AIRWOLF'S speed to exceed mach two from sea level to 85,000 feet."

I wouldn't have any idea how to accomplish this, and I don't know if FSX can simulate an autogyro anyway, so for now I'm just interested in seeing what the limits are for helicopter performance in FSX.

Has anyone attempted to push these limits?

Thanks!

Greetings,

Outstanding. First I applied this one from AVSIM:

Filename: airwafsmod.zip
License: Freeware
Added: 10th September 2004
Downloads: 1484
Author: A.Meyer
Size: 1553kb

then this one from Hovercontrol:

AirwolfAirNCfg
FS9
The modified Air and cfg files for Airwolf.
These are originally the air and cfg files made available by A.Meyer for his revision of Alan Devins original airwolf aircraft. I've only modified it slightly to reduce the fuel consumption so as not to make the aircraft run dry so fast when in mach flight.

Then a few of my own fixes for FSX, including the F/A 18 HUD for full screen view. Now I can see that this aircraft has a top speed of about Mach 1.3

:) Now onto the 3D panel

Thank you very much!

Hi Folks

I could not find what you are referring to at AVSIM, aside from the cosmetic only Airwolf models that I've already tested.

At AVSIM,
search for "Airwolf".

Look at Andreas Meyer's "Gmax Airwolf" files.

Oh well, I guess it is possible then! I don't mind be proved wrong, but I'm not sure whether to be excited that I could be a Mach 1 helicopter or disappointed that MS's physics engine actually thinks it's possible! :)

Airwolf Speed

I have been working on the G-Max version of airwolf and i have had it go mach 2+ have a look on www.youtube.com/hacktrix2006 i am still working on it to make it more realistic and will be making the new beta public very soon.

Just need some help on making a new version so that it starts up and shutsdown like airwolf and to sort the rotor blades to move like the real think!
