• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Hello,

I need help with getting a Google SketchUp file into Flight Simulator X. I have ModelConverterX... and need it so I can place it using " Flight1 Instant Scenery 2"

Please Help
Isaac

Hi,

You will need to take a few steps then:

  • Convert the COLLADA DAE file you exported from SketchUp to a FS MDL object using ModelConverterX
  • Convert the textures to a format that FS can read (e.g. DDS) using ModelConverterX
  • Put your MDL file(s) in a library BGL using Library Creator XML
  • Put the library BGL and the textures in the scenery folder of your project. After that Instant Scenery should pick up the library and you can place the objects.

I tried this and it worked halfway,
I am getting this error when trying to convert it from File DAE to file FSX MDL

7:35 AM DAEReader Information Starting reading of file C:\Users\Isaac\Documents\FSX MDL File\DAE FILE.dae

7:35 AM DAEReader Information Finished reading objects

7:36 AM MDLXWriter Error Failed to locate XtoMDL, please update the path in the options

Not sure what to put
Thanks
Isaac

Hello:

Be sure you have the necessary versions(s) of the FS SDK installed for MDL file(s) you intend to export for use in FS.

Then in ModelConverterX (MCX) on the Options tab, be sure all paths are updated for "Exporter Settings" and "Texture Settings" to reflect the paths of various FS SDK files and your project files, so that MCX can process your project file(s).

PS: The MCX Manual is here:

The MCX Support Forum is here:

PS: "Library Creator XML" is here:

The "Library Creator XML" Manual is here:

Hope this helps ! :)

Hi,

As Gary says, check your ModelConverterX options. It needs to know where the XtoMDL compiler is on your system. The error message indicates that your current path is not correct.

I just can't get this UGH! I have no clue where to put the file directory I have the full "FSX SDK" most forms only have FS2004

The only other option is to hire someone (What I can't at the moment) or do the work for me.... I am very close but can't

OK, you can do this. Get a hold of yourself. Take a deep breath. Have someone slap you. Just kidding. If I can do it, so can you. Please check that the path to XtoMDL is set(as suggested by two posters). Also you need to have all FSX SPs and SDK SPs

Maybe this'll help, Isaac:

mcx_options.jpg

The path is typically:

c:\program files\microsoft games\microsoft flight simulator x sdk\sdk\environment kit\modeling sdk\FSX_GmaxGamePack\plugins\xtomdl.exe

Hello again:

Just in case you are unfamiliar with the newer 'mini-style' "Browse" button used in the MCX GUI, click the button shown below to browse to the actual location of your XToMDL file (if different than the 'default' path Jim stated above).

Hope this helps ! :)

hello my problem is MDLXWriter Error Failed to locate ModelDef.xml, please update the path in the options for Prepar3D and have installed the sdk Prepar3D, please help thanks

just update the path to the prepar3D SDK in the options. browse to where xtomdl file folder is. though I have fsx and I don't know nothing about Prepar3D

Especially check if the modeldef.xml path in the options is correct, as the message indicates that file can not be found.
