• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Help with with 3D objects in P3D v4

Hello. I am currently in the process of making a private airport using ADE. I am still learning the program but can get a simple airport loaded into the sim. One thing I would like to do is add a custom 3D building like a house to the airport, so in essence it would be like having a house with my own private airport. I'm not experienced enough with 3D modeling to do this myself, but I was able to find a premade model of a house that I could open in Blender however I am not sure if or how I can use this file in P3D. The file came as a .fbx and in the preview it has textures but when I import it into Blender I just get a gray model of the house without any of the textures.

So how would I go about getting the model into the correct format so that I can add it as building to my airport and have it show up correctly in the sim?

Here is a link to the model I would like to use.

Thanks

For starters i recommend installing the following plugin into Blender.

This will help you export your model as a .mdl file - which you can then import into MCX (ModelConverterX - the swiss army knife of FS Development) from where you can place your model into the sim.

I don't know in which format the textures from your pre made model are - this might be a seperate thing to look at.
PBR and NonPBR Textures require different texture maps to be assigned to your model.

I would very much like to help you, but i'm not sure my english or FS Development skills are up to the task.

Thank you for the response. The model came as a .fbx file type, but I think you can download it other formats. I don't know if that is different from the format for the actual textures but like I mentioned in the previous post when I load the model into Blender it shows up without the textures and just is all gray. I don't know if there is another 3D program that will automatically load the textures, so I can just open the model up and export it in the correct format.

Edit. So I was actually able to load the model directly into Model Converter X as an .fbx file, but again the textures were missing. I don't know if you have to download them seperately but when I downloaded the model there was only file that came with it.

I'm sorry to say i can't give that .fbx file a try - it seems my Blender version isn't up to date - and updating isn't an option for me as everything is set up and works so i don't want to take the risk of messing something up.y

But, the textures, or rather the created materials in Blender are stored within the .fbx file - that's why you would see the downloaded file just fine in your Blender Workspace but with missing textures in MCX - as there are no textures to display.
You would need to have the textures in a seperate file, but i'm sorry to say i don't know how to save textures out of blender as i'm doing my texturing with a different program and just assign them in Blender.

There might be an option to download them seperately, like in a .png or something, but you'll have to find that out for yourself i guess.

EDIT: If you download the "Vray_Max_zip" Version you will have all the textures you need.

I appreciate the help, but I am still having trouble. So after my last post I realized that you need the vray_max version to get the textures like you mentioned and I get all the files like in the pic you included however I still can't get the textures to load either in Blender or MCX. With MCX I don't see a way to import that type of file. The closes one I see is 3DS files which doesn't work. I tried converting the file into a .obj file and loaded that into MCX however it gives me an error that it can't find the materials and just loads the house in gray like before. Seems like no matter what I try to do I can't get the textures to load in either program and tried everything I can think of. I even tried downloading a completely different model from the site which included the texture but had the same issue.

I know you can only help so much so hopefully someone else will chime in who has more experience.

Thanks again. 👍

Let me try that again, maybe showing you will help.

As i can't load your .fbx file into Blender just imagine this is the house you want to place into P3D:

If you have your .fbx imported into Blender - it should be already UV unwrapped and there should be different materials assigned to it, correct ?
And if not, i'm afraid you will have to do this yourself.

If you installed the Plugin i mentioned in my first post you will have the option to just assign the texture file - this would look something like this. (the texture is assigned in the diffuse slot)

I have created a few different materials and assigned them to the different parts of the model.

And then i would export this via the mentioned Plugin - "export direct for FSX/P3D" and open this .mdl file with MCX.
Convert your textures to .dds format (using MCX if you like) and then place it in the sim.

This is the workflow i go through to get my models into P3D.

1. Create Object (or in your case use existing .fbx)
2. Create textures (or use existing ones)
3. Assign textures in Blender
4. Export
5. Convert and place via MCX

Cheers
