• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

How do I identify the tools I'm after?

In the Wiki, there is the ability to select topics, in several ways.

Under FSX, there is a subcategory called "Scenery Design", which isn't a sub-category at all - it takes you to the complete set of scenery design tools for all versions of FS.

Under Scenery design, there is a subcategory called FSX, which isn't a sub-category at all - it takes you to the complete set of all tools for versions FSX!

You can go around in circles for days!

Over the last 3 years, I've managed a TWIKI Web for my (then) employer, and I know that it is possible to set up a naming and indexing schema that would satisfy both dimensions (and no, I'm not volunteering to do any of it just now) to maske navigation to the information that you are looking for just that bit easier than it is at present.

Hi John,

We are currently doing some work on this already, but this is indeed a good suggestion. At the moment both categories contain everything in them. So we would like to be able to search in two categories at once. I'll see if there is some feature for that or maybe we have to specify the FS version in a different way.

Hi Folks

Folks -
My apologies,
I'd intended to follow up hear earlier,
(long story). :whiteflag

John -
Firstly, just to clarify -
As per Javascript & Java,
Wiki & Twicki are also entirely unrelated,
except in their similarity of name.

Twiki has a far more capable/flexible interlinking mechanism.
Twiki was explicitly developed to support the shortcomings in the Wiki implementation.

FSDeveloper Wiki -
The problem lies with the way a category is handled/labelled by the Wiki.

Articles -
The document content pages.
These can be members of categories & sub-categories.

Category -
Currently the only 'true' categories,
are those listed on the left-hand menu.
i.e.
* General
* Aircraft design
* Scenery design
* Missions
* SimConnect
* File formats
* Tools
* Manuals
These are all top-level 'parent' categories.
A category can contain sub-categories & articles.

Sub-Category -
The FS version categories are actually sub-categories.
i.e.
* FSX
* FS9 (FS2004)
* FS8 (FS2002)
A sub-category can contain sub-categories & articles.
These can be members of categories & sub-categories.

The problem arises when any subcategory
is added as a member of a 'true' category

The most practical solution for all users
would be to elevate the FS-version sub-categories
to true top-level 'parent' categories.

If you don't mind
I'll close this aspect of the category/naming issue here
and restart in a specific thread,
as it's being discussed seperately in at least two threads.

Arno -
If some feature can be found that would be great,
but AIUI there isn't one in MediaWiki.

PS
Can we do something about adjusting the width of this posting box,
so that it utilises user's screen width.
rather than a fixed 500px vertical slot. :D

Many thaks
