• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

I want to put a few sea-van cargo containers on a map in FSX. It will be my first time modding FSX and I have to learn gmax. This is about as simple as it gets, just a box with plane texture.

I know nobody can say how long it will take me. I am interested in knowing how long this took someone else. Is this a 20+ hour kind of project or almost trivial with 3-10 hours of studying?

Thanks (and appologies if this is the wrong forum)

It's a pretty simple procedure. You can create a box in Gmax with just a couple of mouse clicks.

Creating and applying the texture is the only thing that will require any real thought. There are dozens of tutorials on the net (and in the file section here) on doing something this simple.

If you haven't already done so, it will be a LOT more complicated just to install the SDK, install the upadate(s) (SP1 and maybe SP2), find and copy the Gmax Gamepack to the correct place, figure out how to assign a GUID, then export and place your objects with an XML file or an object placement tool.

In this case, creating your actual objects in GMax will take no time and seem trivial in comparison. :)

A sea freight container was one of the first things I created. Learnign the process took longer than actually creating the object. UVW mapping the textures was probably the biggest stumbling block.

But are you sure you actually need to create them? Install the SDK, activate the object placement tool, and scroll through all the default included objects. You might find what you're looking for already exists.
