• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

MSFS20 How to assign aircraft certain .Fx files?

I have created a few different lighting .fx files for aircraft in the sim. I know that the [LIGHTS] section is now in the aircrafts system.cfg file.

I place my newly created .Fx file in MSFS\Official\OneStore\fs-base-effects-legacy

I then change the Systems.cfg EffectFile: file to match the name of my .Fx file (see circled section in photo)

Launch the sim and nothing has changed....Am I missing anything here?

BTW: I'm not exactly sure what #EmMesh is in the line, some aircraft have the same name as the effect file and some do not.

Thank you for the help!

-Jay

As far as I know, FSX effect files are only supported for FSX formatted aircraft that have been edited to work in MSFS.

So there is no way I'd be able to assign a custom .fx file for a default aircraft? How about a payware aircraft that uses the default lighting .Fx's?

I am pretty sure that if the model format is .mdl, you can use .fx effects and if the model format is glTF, you have to use .spb effects.

Crap, that is something I never heard of before, what are .spb effects? 😢🥺

I think I was mistaken about .spb, that is a special compression of .xml that MSFS uses and some predefined effects are stored in, after brushing up, I believe we are expected to use .xml formatted effects.

Where can I find the xml file for effects? Or where can I edit the xml to add a certain effect?
