• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Imagery

Hey guys, I have got myself some satellite imagery of my airport for an update (still to be released). The imagery is very detailed and split up into 27900 512x512 tiles. I have put them all together and saved with a software and it is a total of 3.5GB, Should I just make a plane and place all tiles on there one by one or is there a way to get around this without my computer stalling trying to load this huge file?

Hi,

For which FS version are you working? For FSX I would let resample create a BGL from the imagery.

If you place it as a plane, you will have about 7000 textures even if you use 1024x1024 textures. I don't think any computer will be able to handle so much data.

Yeah gathered that LOL, I am using FS2004 for the scenery...the game engine must have a limit no matter what the texture size is.

Thanks Arno

Hi,

For FS2004 you would have to see which resolution you can still use. Modern PCs can maybe handle a bit more, but a few years ago I placed 15 cm imagery in a scenery for FS2004 and loading the textures completely halted my PC. So you might have to choose to use a lower resolution.

I have it sorted now. Quick question whilst your around, doing the ASM tweak for ground polys, how do I layer them because I have the main ground poly...but when I put on the runway polys...they don't show in FS.

I believe that if my ground poly ASM read ADDCAT Object_0_Scale, 8
would my runway poly have to be ADDCAT Object_0_Scale, 12 ?

I have tryed using your MCX and the ground poly wizard but it doesnt sho wat all on my scenery.

I thought the max FS2004 could do is about 4m per pixel?

That's for resample, to create "photo scenery", like the default FS terrain. That limits you to if I remember correctly, to 4.5m/pixels.

If you use gMax planes, like for example to have an airport background the limit is your PC power to render. This way you can have an 1024x1024 texture represent 256x256 meters, giving you 0.25m/pixel.

Hi,

Yes, you would use layer 0 for the photo for example. Then you can use layer 4 for the aprons, 8 for the runways and 12 for the markings for example. The higher the layer, the more priority.

In FS2004 the resample made photo scenery indeed has a resolution of 4.8 meter pixel, which is usually not enough for nice looking airport sceneries.

Ok so I have no problem doing that :) but I started of from 4 8 12 ect..what is your typical order? I have the main photo at 4, taxiways and aprons at 8, runway at 12, runwaymarking at 16, taxilines at 20 and tyre marks and other dirt textures at 24. Is this a usual way?

Yes, that sounds fine.
