• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX kml error messages in Sketchup

Hi Ken:

I am going to initially refer interested readers to the original thread where this discussion started:

http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/threads/where-do-i-put-the-google-server-tiles.440855/#post-779616

This thread continues to troubleshoot issues from the latter part of the above linked thread which are pertinent to a "Sketchup geolocation workaround" recently discussed elsewhere within the Sketchup forum:

http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/threads/updated-sketchup-wont-work.440430/#post-777782

...which uses the plugin Ruby script "KML Tools" by Aerilius ...in Sketchup-v8.

Hi Gary,

Well, I tried that and that does not make any difference. I right clicked on the Sketchup 8 icon shortcut on my desktop and clicked Run as Administrator. I'm still getting the error prompts. I was wondering if it could be something I'm doing in creating this file but I guess if that was the case, it would not have imported on your system.

Did you see the satellite view of the KBHM airport?

Please explain this more clearly, as I do not understand what you mean by seeing the satellite view of the KBHM airport.

Where was it that you anticipated I was to see a satellite view of the KBHM airport: ?

* Sketchup (after import of your "Shuttlesworth Airport.kml" file)

...or:

* Google Earth (after double-clicking your "Shuttlesworth Airport.kml" file in Windows Explorer)

Did you attempt to export from Google Earth via the "Shuttlesworth Airport.kml" file, anything other than 1 or more poly-lines ...via the "Add Path" feature on the Google Earth icon toolbar ? :scratchch

When I installed the plugin, I did it from inside Sketchup by using the Install extension button. I assume I did it correctly. I don't understand why I'm getting these prompts if I did everything correctly, and I am running Windows 7 64 bit.

That is the recommended procedure; if you can find the KML Tools plugin feature option in the Sketchup-v8 Extensions pick-list, it is more likely (but not guaranteed) to be working properly.

It is possible there may be an issue involving other factors with the info actually coded into your KML file.

This may be a result of the number- or type- of KML features you 'selected' within Google Earth itself that were assumed to have been intended to be saved into that (1) KML file ...when it was exported by Google Earth.

Hopefully we might determine what that may have been, pending your reply to this further discussion. :)

Hi Ken

I thought that was the purposed of the kml tool, to be able to download images from Google Satellite views, since Google no longer provides the Satellite images. I thought it was an alternative way to get the satellite images. Before in Sketchup, one could select File, click on Geo Location, and Add Location, and that would open a satellite images so that one could use to make 3D models, as I did with the KBHM Terminal. That is no longer possible in the make versions of Sketchup, unless you buy Sketchup Pro. That's what I though this tool does, and it was an alternative, or a work around, and that's why I asked if you had a satellite image of the airport. I guess I must have missed understood about what this too was for. So, what is the purpose of this kml tool if it's not for attaining satellite images?

Well, double clicking the kml file on my desktop does open the Google Earth Pro and brings up the satellite view of that airport.

See the photo of what I did below in the jpg file.

Notice at the left under Places at the bottom, you'll see the Shuttlesworth Airport kml file that I right clicked on when I saved it to my desktop. I hope this helps explain what I did.

Okay before I leave, am I correct that you want me to continue this discussion at the very first link you posted above?

Please review very carefully, the entire procedure for the so-called "Sketchup geolocation work-around":

http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/threads/updated-sketchup-wont-work.440430/#post-777782

Well, double clicking the kml file on my desktop does open the Google Earth Pro and brings up the satellite view of that airport.

That process will merely launch Google Earth to a saved location via a 'PushPin' somewhat like a shortcut in windows will launch an executable file, and it does not necessarily correlate with what other information may be within the KML file.

See the photo of what I did below in the jpg file.

Notice at the left under Places at the bottom, you'll see the Shuttlesworth Airport kml file that I right clicked on when I saved it to my desktop. I hope this helps explain what I did.

In this case, we are interested in using the "Add Path" tool on the Google Earth icon toolbar to draw a line, and then save (export) that from Google Earth to a KML file.

Okay before I leave, am I correct that you want me to continue this discussion at the very first link you posted above?

Ken.

NO ! o_O

Any discussion related to the sub-topic of a "Sketchup geolocation work-around" should, IMHO, be done within this thread.

The thread first linked at the top of this new thread is only to discuss SBuilderX tile server download DLLs; I linked to it so that interested readers could get familiar with the preceding discussion so that we do not use more "forum resources" by quoting those latter posts in this thread. ;)

Gary,

I followed all the directions again and I'm still having the same issues. You asked me earlier what I meant when I asked you if you could see a satellite view, or image of the airport. Is that the purpose of this work around, because you said "To use any Sketchup 8 version to Geo-locate imported aerial imagery 'background' images." I don't understand it's purpose if it does not import aerial images.

Ken.

Hi Ken:

I believe it is reasonably clear from review of the detailed step-by-step procedures at various points within that entire thread

...that one will have previously have saved a Google Earth zoomed image of the footprint area desired, as described here:

http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/threads/updated-sketchup-wont-work.440430/#post-775434

Work-around:

To use any Sketchup 8 version to Geo-locate 3D models / import aerial imagery 'background' images: :coffee:

Google Earth (aka "GE"): < uses stand-alone desktop application >:

1.) Set user eye-point camera in top-down view:

2.) Log geographic coordinates for a corner of a building

3.) Take measurements for the longest dimension of the building end-to-end

4.) File > Save > Save image (save a *.JPG file to disk)

Then
one will follow the "Alternative (simplified') Work-around" procedure ...later in that same thread:

http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/threads/updated-sketchup-wont-work.440430/#post-777782

1.) Create a path poly-line in Google Earth

2.) Export that path poly-line from Google Earth as a KML file

3.) In Sketchup-v8, Menu > Plugins > KML Tools > Import KML ...is used to import the KML file exported by Google Earth

4.) Rotated Rectangle is used to draw a Face over the extents of the imported KML poly-line 'path'

5.) Import and map as a texture material, the Google Earth zoomed image of the footprint area desired onto that new Face.

Sketchup does not automatically do this for you; this must be done manually ...as the above linked procedures explain.

Please read that entire thread from the opening post onward ! :teacher:
