• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FS2004 LandClass Problem, Sbuilder FS9

Hi there!

Two years ago I started learning scenery design for FSX, now I've switched to FS9 and I can see it's a bit more difficult to create scenery for this sim. I've been a long while without making any scenery development, so my skills are not too good, in fact I'm new to FS9 scenery.
So, to take a smooth start I've taken a little island as my target! St. Eustatius (TNCE).
I've used Sbuilder to edit the default terrain (HP***.BGL,HL***.BGL,FL***.BGL,AB***.BGL and RD***.BGL) files.
I've also added a SRTM mesh with srtmfill and srtm to bgl.
AFCAD edited with ADE.
Everything seems to be OK, but the landclass is not displaying correctly.
This is what I've got.

Any hints?

Ok, solved it, there was a problem with overlapping Water polys...
Thanks for all the help in this forum!
BTW Can anyone tell me which steps to follow on Photoscenery creation?
Sorry for such a stupid post, I ask moderators to delete it if they want.

I want to change tool for the creation of island and making of landclass, etc, before I`ve been working with FsxKml, but it's a litle crazy, would be sbuilder good for that. by the way I thought that the island was photorreal, good work

ahahaha! All that you see is FS9 crappy textures.
From what I know, and that is what I did, you must edit original bgl files from scenery folder to correct islands in FS9. I used Sbuilder and ADE for that.

Editing the original FS2004 files is a bad idea. The only instance in which this would be needed is to replace the original HP BGLs. These are the LWM poly files, and their flattens cannot be 'undone'. Other than these files, airport flatten files may need the same reworking... but all other terrain files can be have exclusions to solve those problems.

Altering the original files would cause problems with distributing your work due to copyright provisions, and due to the fact that others may also have altered these files, creating a real mess for the endusers.

But... if this work is for your own use only, it may end up being the best/only solution.

So, if I want to distribute this airport, I should do what? All information that I've been able to find is talking about editing the base files. Where should I put that Excludes? What are the steps to take for this task?
BTW thanks for your info!

In FSX, the problem of flattens was fixed. All terrain can be returned to the original mesh for a complete redesign.

In FS2004, this was never resolved.

Some commercial terrain providers, like Ultimate Terrain, completely rewrite the base BGLs, without using the default content, thereby avoiding copyright issues.

Decompiling, altering, and recompiling the defaults disallows distribution , as the copyright is breached. I'm not the copyright police... just stating the situation. Microsoft has been very tolerant of our indiscretions violating their rights, but you never know what would set them off.

The simplest cure is to use FSX....

There is a great deal of content on these forums detailing the creation of exclude polygons using SBuilder for FS9. And the help files also provide instruction. The only items that cannot be excluded are the water and airport flattens. Many times, these can be compensated by using sloped flattens in SBuilder, to "rebuild' the mesh in previously flattened areas.

Thank you very much for the hints, I'll keep on searching and reading.
At least I was right, develoving scenery for FS9 is much more tedious than for FSX. BTW I wasn't going to release this to the net, for the moment I'm only testing and trying to improve my skills!
